trawling is the most unethical way to “fish”. it is destroying our ecosystem we desperately need to protect. halibut, king salmon, and other species are declining significantly and will be considered endangered if we don’t do anything to stop trawling. listen to Alaskan voices and put an end to trawling.
drew supported: Protect Togiak Bay's and Bristol Bay's Ecosystem from Bottom Trawlers
Bottom Trawling completely destroys our halibut breeding grounds and takes hundreds of thousands of our communities Chinook salmon along with our annual sockeye run. Subsistence has been extremely low here in our village of Togiak and they trawl on the straightaway right before Kulukak, they also trawl between our islands with a smaller vessel as to be more discreet(probably not shown on the maps) but as soon as they make it back to the bigger vessel they do pull in and have all of the fish that were caught with a hydraulic lift.

I believe culling this flock would be unjust and misguided for several reasons. First, further testing on the remaining ostriches could provide valuable insights into the virus, benefiting both scientific understanding and future prevention efforts. Second, the fact that only two ostriches succumbed to the virus approximately five months ago—without it decimating the entire flock—suggests resilience worth studying. Understanding why this occurred could be crucial for managing similar outbreaks. Finally, this decision directly impacts a local BC farm at a time when supporting Canadian agriculture is more important than ever. As both an animal lover and a supporter of science, this proposed culling deeply saddens me. I urge reconsideration in favor of solutions that prioritize research, compassion, and the livelihoods of local farmers.

As a lifelong resident and proud member of the First Nation community, I am deeply connected to this land and the river that has sustained our people for generations. I initiated this petition to support the creation of a steelhead hatchery, which I believe is a vital step toward restoring balance in our watershed and protecting future generations of fish, culture, and community. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and self-determination. I am hopeful that new governments will recognize the importance of this effort and approach our vision with the respect and support it deserves.

Ontario’s forests, wetlands, and rivers are more than just landscapes, they are living, breathing ecosystems that sustain us in ways we often take for granted. Every time we walk through a forest, hear birdsongs at dawn, or witness the delicate balance between predator and prey, we are reminded that nature is not separate from us but it is a part of us. Bill 5 threatens to disrupt this delicate balance by stripping away environmental protections that safeguard Ontario’s biodiversity. The loss of species isn’t just about numbers, it’s about the disappearance of experiences that nourish the soul and heal the mind. The sight of a monarch butterfly dancing between wildflowers, the rustling of ancient trees, or the quiet presence of a deer at dusk these moments are not just beautiful, they are vital. Biodiversity is not a luxury!! It is the foundation of life itself. Every species, no matter how small, plays a role in maintaining the health of our air, water, and soil. When we weaken protections for endangered species and allow unchecked development to erase habitats, we aren’t just losing wildlife, we are losing the deep, restorative connection that nature offers to us all. I urge lawmakers to reconsider Bill 5. Let’s choose a future where economic progress does not come at the expense of the very life force that sustains us.

We are doing a very poor job of co-existing with wildlife in Alberta. We need good stewardship and conservation policies to protect wildlife not invitations to slaughter them.

These endangered-spies animals belong to all Albertans and Canadians. STOP allowing small interest groups, eg. hunters and hunting guides, etc, to dictate wildlife policies in Alberta. Animals have "a right to live" also. Who decides if a magnificent grizzly bear is a "problem bear." The hunters? the hunting guides? As a minister of the Alberta government, it is the job to PROTECT wildlife, not sell it to the cheapest bidder. Thank you for rescinding this legislation. Kathy Danielson, Calgary

As a former subsistence trapper and hunter and a member of an Alberta indigenous people, I understand the care that must be taken to not over-hunt, overfish, over-trap and over-harvest a region. I lived and supported my family and extended family, as a young man, through trapping, hunting, fishing and gathering plants for food and sale. Without the little money this brought in and the food it provided, my wife and children, in-laws and elders would not have had enough to live, slowly getting ill from a bad diet of processed foods and not enough warm clothes and shelter. Keeping the balance of life in a region is imperative. Knocking nature off kilter by destroying a species or through imbalance is a way of destroying the ground upon which you and all others stand and live. It is insanity to act in this fashion because once a species, whether plant or animal, is deleted or lowered irretrievably in a region, that region will slowly begin to die. In this day and age regions of nature are surrounded and broken up by huge swaths of the earth that are destroyed by “civilization “ and “progress “ and poisoned by “weed killers” and “fertilizers” and “industrial and industry chemicals” seeping deep into the earth and water table affecting all life at a cellular level without any kind of reversal, creating cancers and diseases of internal organs, making everyone sick so that it’s impossible to live without medicines that are as potent and poisonous as the causes of the illnesses whose symptoms the medicines are supposed to alleviate. I am not a tree-hugging, return to running around bare-assed in the woods kind of person. I know that this way of life has already gone too far and the earth will never recover and that we have to live in the shit we dump, eat and drink the shit that is in our food and breathe the shit in the air until we die and this is the life we are leaving to our children and all of nature. Too harsh? It’s the bare truth. An out-of-balance way of life, driven by greed, a desire for “things” that we could live without and that we throw away in favour of new “things”. A way of life that is driving all reasonable alternatives, that kept us alive and well for eons, out of existence. And instead of working to slow the race to extinction we are pushing to get there faster by decisions like the ones we are discussing here and protesting against through this petition. Follow the science. Listen to the ones who work to slow down our rush to extinction and show that you listened by following their instructions. Put away your greed and enjoy watching life in its natural habitat. This will only be available on video someday soon and our children’s children will only see an animal in a cage or stuffed in a museum, a plant in a book and never smell fresh air perfumed by flowers after a rain. ( I fear the day when we love, live, eat, breathe, drink, sleep through artificially created lifestyles. Wait! We are already there. Take a pill and settle down. ) I have said enough. I am in my dotage (look it up in a dictionary) and I will be gone soon. Just like my way of life. Just like your way of life.
