It was a sad day to lose the fight to save the ostrich. But what happened next was out of a horror film. I have PTSD and will never be the same. These innocent ostrich were brutally shot at for hours in terror. They were panicked running into walls of hay and each other. The Tom's, which are males would try to protect the smaller. The wounded lay all night in pain , trapped, till morning when they were repeatedly shot again or beheaded. This was not a humane cull, far from it. This was sadistic. I will never forget how these ostrich suffered at the hand of our own Canadian government. I want justice.
Jamie supported: Demand an Independent Investigation Into the Inhumane Killing of 314 Ostriches in Edgewood
These birds were calm, healthy animals that were never tested. Instead of being treated humanely, they were killed in a way that was chaotic, cruel, and deeply disturbing. I have been unable to stop thinking about their suffering. I am shaken, angry, and disgusted. Every new detail raises more questions about how this was handled. We need an independent investigation to uncover what actually happened.

The culling of these animals was inhumane, cruel, evil and the worst animal abuse I have ever seen in my 64 years. The people who did this should be criminally charged. Canada should be ashamed.

I am calling on Prime Minister Carney and the CFIA to immediately stop the planned murders of 400 healthy ostriches in Edgewood, BC. This action is unethical, unnecessary, and will not be tolerated by Canadians who expect science-based and humane policies. The CFIA has publicly stated that this depopulation effort is intended to “minimize impacts on the $6.8 billion domestic poultry industry” and protect international export access worth $1.75 billion. Let’s be clear: this is an economic agenda, not a public health emergency. There has been no transparent evidence that these ostriches pose a risk to animal or human health. To kill healthy birds — without a clear, provable justification — for the sake of trade optics is a betrayal of both the animals and the people who care for them. I demand a full stop to this plan, independent veterinary review, and a commitment to HUMANE, evidence-based alternatives. Canada’s animal protection laws are some of the worst in the world. Canadian's integrity depends on policies that take a clear, ethical stand.

I disagree with culling birds unless there is evidence of a human health hazard. Based on what has been presented, there is no evidence of transmissible disease, and no reasonable attempt has been made for proof. Quarantine is an option if the disease needs time to show up. I remember when acres of ash trees in their prime were clear cut to control the ash borer. The clear cutting did not work. I feel this is the same type of approach and its viability is questionable.
