Overflowing trash, rats, detritus blowing throughout the roads and parks of this area, drug use in parks around children, these were just some of the problems this community experienced while the properties were being used as emergency shelters - proving to us that a permanent shelter is inappropriate and dangerous to current residents as well as those they hope to house.
The fact that this shelter has been made permanent without any actual thought on the effect it would have on our neighborhood is just disappointing. The trash thrown all over has become an eyesore and makes it pretty embarrassing to claim this as the neighborhood I live in. Probably the biggest problem I have with this is the fact that 90% of the people in this shelter who, may be homeless, are not car-less and the fact that this shelter does not allow parking in their lots (which is an absolutely waste of space) makes parking for tax paying residents next to impossible. There’s absolutely no reason why this shelter can’t be moved out to a less densely populated neighborhood. Please. Please. Just some actual thought on this matter is all I would ask since there clearly hasn’t been any.
We used to go there on Friday nights and enjoy the buffet and listen to the jazz band. My niece went over there a couple weeks ago and the immigrants met her at the car, telling her that she could not come over there anymore because it belongs to them. What has happened? It's not fair to the people who build Chicago and pay taxes here.
I cannot support this proposal unless a detailed plan is outlined to the community leaders. A plan that would include the employment of case workers, licensed social workers and registered nurses from a social service agency for a start, so that the homeless will receive assistance in becoming acclimated to being housed again. Sticking people who have been homeless for any amount of time, short or long period of time, in a building without being given the needed assistance in living housed again is a recipe for disaster both for the community the proposed housing development is in, but also to those who are to be housed.
I have worked as an RN for a social service agency dedicated to housing the severely mentally ill and homeless, so I am very aware of the challenges faced by the homeless when returning to a life of being housed. Not every homeless person is ready to be housed immediately. A large number of homeless people end up becoming part of a homeless community, and the rules that exist when you are in the homeless community are different than when you are housed. The things that make one successful while being homeless are not the things that make you successful when being housed. Making a change from one circumstance to the other is not instant or easy to the one being housed. Assistance and guidance, while being respectful of the homeless person’s wishes and self professed wants and needs are critical to the success of this change for the homeless person. In my experience in working with the homeless, I have found the “Harm Reduction” philosophy/approach along with a commitment to long term support for the rehoused, to give the most long standing success. This approach is very labor intensive and can take a very long time and MONEY over the long haul to achieve lasting success. And keep in mind, as I said, not every homeless person has the ability to immediately be ready to be rehoused.
Unless there is come kind of plan laid with the kind long term commitment and money to reacclimatize those who are homeless into the housed community spelled out to this community and it’s leadership, I cannot support this proposal.
I'm a little disappointed that the community wasn't involved in this decision to make this location a permanent shelter. I have been in this community for over 38 years. We haven't had any problems until they opened a temporary shelter for the migrants. I am not opposed to housing the homeless and migrants, but the location should be in another area. This is a residential area and it has been transferred into a street vendor, auto body shop and drug selling. I can't enjoy the beauty of looking out my widow at the lake. This area has a lot of seniors and they can't enjoy the quiet area they had in the past. They are afraid to walk outside the building or in the park. There are so many other buildings that could have been considered. How would you feel if you lived at the Newport Condo or your parents? I don't think you would be pleased with the decision that the city has made. Please reconsider this move to open this shelter.
I am concerned about property value and the current loitering around the properties surrounding Shelter. I have witnessed drinking and smoking marijuana outside the side door entrance and watched the person go back to the shelter after. Excessive hanging out on the corners . I DO NOT oppose helping the homeless but the LOCATION I DO!
We have lived here for a year and have recently renewed our lease at the Newport building. We love this area and we were in full support of the emergency shelter. But a full time 750 person shelter? That will be detrimental to the quality of this lovely, family oriented, area. If this moves forward I cannot see us remaining in the neighborhood. We left NYC because the homeless population wasn't being helped OR controlled. As a private citizen there's only so much you can do. I don't want to go back to walking by people doing drugs. We already can't stand the marijuana usage in the parks and streets.
I have been living in this area over 25 years. Since the shelter open I am uncomfortable walking in the park due to migrants cutting hair and hanging out in the area. I am concerned regarding my property value decreasing due to their activities. I have volunteered on committees where we have enhanced Hyde Park such as adding Whole Foods, diminishing vagrants on 53 by replacing gas stations and adding Target in place of. Allowing this shelter to continue is a disregards to my values in this area. I will have to seek another neighbor to live in.
