Cap Rent and Implement Fair Housing Policies in Arizona

The Issue

I am an Arizona resident living in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment which is 1124 sq ft. Despite numerous problems with my apartment, I was recently informed that my rent would skyrocket from $1500 to $2200 if I switched to a month-to-month lease. This staggering $700 increase feels nothing short of criminal.

This is not just my story; it's the story of countless Arizonans struggling with unregulated rental prices and unfair housing policies. It's time for change.

We call on the state of Arizona to implement rent caps as follows: studios should never exceed $500, one-bedroom apartments should never be more than $700, two-bedrooms should not surpass $900, and three-bedrooms should be capped at $1100. These proposed limits are reasonable and will ensure that housing remains affordable for all residents.

In addition to this, we demand an end to pet rent charges and the requirement for proof of income being twice or more than the rental price. These practices disproportionately affect low-income individuals and families who are already struggling financially.

According to data from Zillow (2021), median rents in Phoenix have increased by nearly 7% over the past year alone - well above inflation rates - making it increasingly difficult for average earners to afford decent housing. We believe that everyone deserves access to safe, affordable housing without fear of exorbitant increases or discriminatory practices. This also will help the homelessness crisis.
