McLane Nature Trail has been part of our lives for over thirty years. The view of the hills as we walk toward the creek is very peaceful and beautiful, particularly if topped with low clouds in the fall. A cut on the east side of these hills would definitely spoil the experience for years to come. There are examples of clear cuts in other parts of the park. Please consider incorporating the east side of these hills into the protected trail area.

Please save the forest that fringes mcclane. We used to have giant 2nd growth forest that was clearcut near by. Old growth is no longer in capital forest so we should honor any 2nd growth that is still left. It helps keep the forest healthy. Thank you

This is such a beautiful area for birding and seeing salmon. It is also a great spot for environmental education. My kids have been here on school field trips, I’ve helped DOE staff teach WCC crews about water quality monitoring here, and I’ve taken a winter twig ID class here. This area provides important habitat, as well as recreational and educational opportunities.

Mclane Creek nature trail is a beautiful walk suitable for all ages and abilities, very close to many people's homes. We have a limited number of places like this, and they deserve our care. Natural resources have value beyond the financial value. They have great value for the animals, plants, and other living things that call them home, they benefit the larger ecosystems by being kept intact, and they have mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits for the humans who visit them. I would not be happy to see this beautiful place logged.

This area hosts a complex environment including wood ducks, beavers, turtles and salamanders among others. Logging above this water system is not a good thing to be doing especially with the climate change moving towards increased frequency of droughts. Also, it is a wonderful place to go for a walk and observe nature. This is an on going field trip location for all the near by elementary schools. I went with some of the field trips as a parent. We need to preserve this are and NOT start logging in a environmentally sensitive area. DONT move forward with logging the forest above McLane Creek.

I’m an environmental educator for a local nonprofit in Olympia WA, I couldn’t stress more on the importance of why this issue matters for our community. It’s imperative that we reserve these spaces for future generations to come. I could argue all day about the existential threat of climate change and how carbon sequestration via old growth is foundational in stopping the threat at hand. So leaving trees alone to get old might just be a good solution. But I want to focus on the importance of outdoor spaces for a community. Especially as our world shifts to a more technologically advanced society, having outdoor spaces to go to are becoming more and more important. This trail is used by so many for teaching local students in the area about the flora and fauna of the region. I learned here as a student in college and I would hate to see this be ruined for future generations. Clear cutting the surrounding land would completely diminish the beauty that makes McLane Creek Nature Trail so special and iconic to our local communities. This place allowed me to form relationships with the environment that were pivotal in my education and career path. Changing the surrounding landscape by logging it could seriously lessen the chance for future generations to form those same relationships with their environment. I truly hope this land is left alone and saved for future generations to appreciate and learn from as I have.

McLane Creek and the wetlands that feed into it have an incredibly healthy ecosystem. Healthy freshwater ecosystems have cascading effects that reach as far as the ocean. Washington has had horrible erosion issues leading to degradation of streams and other freshwater wetlands. It would be a disservice to the local communities, cities, and state as a whole, to log this area. We don't need more working forests. We need more healthy forests.

There is so little old growth or even not-so-old growth left in Washington. And there is evidence from British Columbia forests that clear cutting actually increases fire danger, because it dries out watersheds and removes trees as sources of water vapor.

4 generations of my family have enjoyed the McLane Creek area. The complex forest above and adjacent to the nature trail needs to be preserved for this and future generations. Many local Thurston County school children visit McLane with their grade levels to learn about the local ecosystem. These school aged youngsters will someday be the stewards, hopefully.
