As residents and visitors to Washington State, we urge the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to remove Bears U1 and U2 from upcoming logging auctions and save it for perpetuity. This is one of the most accessible forests in the Black Hills and it borders the beloved McLane Creek Nature Trail, a vital recreational area that showcases our local ecosystem. We believe that these parcels should be protected to maintain the tranquility of this cherished wilderness in Thurston County.
The Washington Supreme Court has affirmed the DNR has a responsibility to prioritize the interests of residents and can preserve forests for carbon capture rather than solely focusing on profit.
Research indicates that cutting down old growth forests creates a “carbon debt” that can take centuries to recoup with new growth, highlighting the critical importance of prioritizing conservation of these ecosystems over destructive logging practices (Source: Woodwell Climate Research Center). By choosing not to log Bears U1 and U2, which contains some trees over 100 years old (Source: Legacy Forest Defense Coalition), the DNR is aiding our state’s conservation goals and carbon reduction efforts for future generations.
These carbon-capturing and structurally complex woods create a vital backdrop for the McLane Creek Nature Trail. Teaming with wildlife such as elk, cougars, and birds, the tree canopy also filters rainwater and reduces sediment to the creek below, an already endangered salmon run. Moreover, the area provides a tranquil retreat for Thurston County residents, a haven for local families, a disability-friendly trail for seniors, and a must-see for visitors across the state. Logging Bears U1 and U2 would change this landscape forever.
We can SAVE MCLANE with your help! Let’s rally together to pressure the DNR and other elected officials to stand up for this cause. Together, we demand the protection of Bears U1 and U2, a scenic gem along the McLane Creek Nature Trail. Add your voice to this vital effort—sign the petition today!
