Iowa simply doesn’t represent or care to represent the people in its cities. I’m a Des Moines man through and through, but I’m finding it hard to call myself an Iowan. All Iowans deserve their home and deserve to not face discrimination.
We were one of the first states to recognize same-sex marriage, and that brought benefits to the state, not only socially, but monetarily. Even if our elected officials do not care about Queer people, they should care about our money and votes.
As a cis woman, I have never been scared in public restrooms. However, I am scared now with how our rights are being stripped away. It’s not marginalized people who are causing issues for the country.
As a Des Moines native, I hope the city will protect and support its most vulnerable residents. Recent actions by the State Government do not reflect the opinions of the majority, nor do they follow the spirit of our constitution. Des Moines should be open and welcoming to all.
This is absolutely the wrong path to go for this community. How can we trust a builder who has already lied about doing things they haven’t? We’ve already disrupted the wildlife in the area enough, and this is one of the last areas with Black Park that they can find sanctuary. The walking trail is beautiful and peaceful, and will only be interrupted by apartments. The schools are not able to accommodate more students. The retaining wall with buildings on top will be an eye sore. I support growth in the community but not at the expense of children, safety and the environment.
I implore the City of Lenexa to evaluate the ratio of apartments:affordable multi-family duplexes/villas ($250k-$400k):single family affordable housing:>$500 single family housing. Our young families are getting squeezed out of Lenexa due to high rent and high home costs. We need to have a broad population in age and income to have a prosperous city. Our teachers, firefighters, police officers should be able to live in the communities they serve!
We cannot afford another rate increase on our water bill. The quality of the water that we pay way too much for, is terrible! It's yellow and tastes horrible! It's not our fault that the city hasn't kept up with necessary infrastructure of the water plant and I understand that it must be updated but why then are you allowing so much building and growth to take place when our current system can't support it? It makes no sense! It's just greed at the expense of the Palm Coast residents and so many residents have moved out because they can't afford to live here anymore with these constant utility hikes!!
Our bill last month was $170, and there are only two of us in the house. We do NOT have a pool and we never use our sprinkler system. At the age of 57, this is already more than I have ever paid for water. How are larger families going to afford the increases? It’s clear that previous city councils have made really bad decisions, and we are paying the price. If the infrastructure can’t support the expansion, the answer to the problem is to STOP the excessive building. Charge these large national companies who are putting up thousands of homes in these enormous communities instead of current Palm Coast residents.
