Do not let the Opportunity House Become a Daytime Homeless Shelter
The Issue
We are concerned residents, business owners, and property owners of Hendersonville, North Carolina. The city's plan to purchase the Opportunity House at 1411 Asheville Highway in conjunction with Hendersonville Connections Center deeply worries us. This building borders several neighborhoods that are home to many young children and elderly residents. By allowing the Hendersonville Connections Center to operate a day-time homeless shelter there, we fear it will decrease safety in our neighborhood, putting our children and elderly at risk.
The potential impact on property values is another concern. A study conducted by researchers from New York University found that proximity to homeless shelters can negatively affect property values (NYU Furman Center). Our homes and businesses are not just buildings; they represent years of hard work and investment for each of our families' futures.
Moreover, an increase in crime rate associated with homeless shelters would put further demand on an already strained Hendersonville Police Department. It's important to note that this isn't an unfounded fear - research from the Journal of Urban Economics has shown links between homelessness and increased crime rates. This does not include other challenges like sanitation, increased drug use, public intoxication, and additional financial burdens on property owners to increase security and safety measures. All these issues are of great concern.
Lastly, it's important to mention that this isn't the first time such an idea has been attempted by the Hendersonville Connections Center - they have failed before. The organization leased a much smaller location, 701 7th Avenue, where they implemented the same plan. However, the property owner opted not to renew their lease after just two years.
We understand that homelessness is a serious issue which needs addressing but believe there are more suitable locations for such facilities away from residential areas where vulnerable populations reside.
We urge you not just as city officials, but as fellow members of this community to reconsider this decision for the safety and well-being of all residents involved.
