As a student, I despise the system for delaying honest students who need to use the restroom and must waste time pulling out their Chromebook or phone to log into 5 Star or whatever it's called. Smoking/vaping is an issue, especially in the boys' bathroom which I think is a problem that should be curtailed. However, I do not think it is right to punish the whole student body in order to stop pa small minority. Furthermore, if students have no desire to learn, it is impossible to force them to do so. You can throw them homework or detention, but you can do nothing to change their attitudes. It's far better to foster a healthy learning environment for those with a real drive to learn. Part of this starts with the bathroom passes and being able to use the bathroom when necessary without the lag time of asking the teacher for a QR code and logging in. It's disruptive and unnecessary.
I believe e-hall pass to be detrimental to the learning experience as the simple action of going to the bathroom results in a decision between finishing work, or waiting for a pass to open to go to the bathroom. It is evident that this has NOT contributed much to catching smokers in Southeast, nor has there been any cases of fights being stopped due to this complex and unnecessary idea added to the ever changing school system today. Accidents are also a very REAL problem that has occurred due to this pass system both in middle AND high schools including Southeast. As students begin to express how this new technology is doing nothing but causing hundreds of problems by simply going to the bathroom, no admins or staff have opened their ears to this expression, hence this petition requiring to be made.
I agree the hall passes are a waste of time. As human beings we cannot control our bodily functions anymore than the next person. Why should our right as students to use the bathroom WHEN we need to go be taken away? Half the time when people ask to go to the bathroom they are denied. And having to sit and wait is uncomfortable, it can be a disruption to the students concentration.
I agree that E-hall pass have made it much more difficult to use the restroom. Humans have a need to go like any other animal does, and if we are denied or kept for too long, it can actually cause blockages or infections that can become life threatening if left untreated. I've always found that it can take 20 minutes or more just to submit one singular pass that will only keep me out for 3 minutes tops. These online passes have not helped more than they've caused problems. We as humans should, in theory, be allowed to go to the restroom whenever we may need. These are my beliefs, and I hope our voices get heard.
We went through the same issue and had to get our pediatrician to right a doctor's note every year for 12 years straight. So long as it's not disruptive it shouldn't be a problem, as adults we wouldn't let anyone tell us we couldn't use the restroom when we really needed to, why should kids have l not have that ability.
