As a former Animal Care Attendant at the San Jose shelter, I saw more in three months than anyone should. I witnessed neglect, mismanagement, and preventable suffering. These were not isolated incidents, but evidence of deep systemic failure.
Leadership had countless chances to correct course. They didn’t.
Lola's death was the breaking point for me. She died unattended, left with an IV and a slip lead, while management was nowhere to be found. The public was misled, and internally, there was no accountability, just silence.
Unanswered questions, unsafe conditions, and retaliation against those who speak up.
My two closest coworkers who were both very competent were recently fired.
I personally endured bullying, retaliation, and even a mishandled sexual harassment report. I was punished for raising safety concerns like unlabelled cleaning sprays, no emergency plan, and a lack of written training documents. Unqualified staff were assigned tasks like dog feeding and one staff member who was supposed to be training me I watched feed each dog exactly 1/2 bowl of food, despite their size or medical needs.
Basic animal care protocols were inconsistently followed or completely disregarded. No vet care on weekends or holidays led to animals suffering being prolonged.
The workplace culture is toxic. There's no formal training, no clear pathways for advancement, and minimal support. Part-time staff are burned out, turnover is constant, and morale is at rock bottom.
Despite an increased budget, live release rates have dropped and critical positions like another vet, 2 animal control officers and 2 of the 3 PM coordinator positions remain unfilled. Why?
Shelter management make 6 figure salaries meanwhile part-time care attendants like myself make <$30k/year and receive no health insurance despite working with animals like feral cats.
Multiple coworkers attempted to file incident reports at work following injuries and were discouraged from doing so. A coworker who was not rabies vaccinated was asked to euthanize a bat. Myself and others were scheduled to come in at later times than tasks assigned to us on the board, making it impossible for animals to be fed or cleaned at the time posted.
This is not a personal grievance. It’s a demand for change. For transparency. For competent, ethical leadership. The recent audit only confirmed what many of us already knew. Yet nothing changed.
Remaining silent would be complicity. We need to continue advocating for the animals who rely on us and for the frontline workers who try to protect them in spite of it all.
We need accountability. For the animals. For the low level staff. For the community. The time for change is now.
The owners are on probation for animal cruelty and abuse but continue to neglect abuse and violate animals every day. What is the point of probation when they continue what they please?
They are professional scammers that avoid taxes and hide behind a fake church and charity to fuel their sick need to abuse animals, vulnerable people, and children. That so called church has been officially denounced and is being investigated for fraud. Nearly every criminal there is on probation or worse and continue to scam every poor simple family who just want to try a new hobby for their family. What people don’t know is the countless animals that die every day from abuse neglect and other horrors that can’t be posted, at that place. They continue to proudly parade their sick pony shows, petting zoos, and fake church year round and innocent people lose a lot of money meanwhile those innocent people are paying for animals to be disposed of faster than a baby’s diapers… They are a conglomerate of sickos. They all need to be put back in jail for good… SERIOUSLY ANYONE READING THIS WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES PLEASE CONTACT THE AUTHORITIES OR A COUNSELING SERVICE THAT CAN HELP YOU AND THOSE THEY HAVE ALSO AFFECTED!!!
Injustices are all around us, but we have grown use to combating them. Today, however, a particular injustice has caught me off gaurd and drove me to tears! The cruelty that goes on at Four Paws and A Tail is unfathomable. This estblishment is a prison for puppies! Their conditions are atrocious; as the puppies are confined in small metal cages with shredded paper. (Ever heard of artifical grass?!) During my time in the store, I witnessed puppies eat bits of paper----- which is bound to cuase gastrointestinal issues---- and lie in enclosures teeming with urine and feces. I could tell the puppies were miserable. They were clawing to get out and constantly cried. One staff member in particular showed no mercy to the pups. She forcefully pushed a dog into the cage and it began to whimper. The staff were even rude to customers. Of course, I shouldn't have expected otherwise. Only witches would work at a place so vile. In addition, they mislabeled a Maltipoo's cage, saying that it was a Teddeybear puppy. We must work diligently to ensure no more puppies suffer like the ones at Four Paws and A Tail have. We must fight for those who don't have a voice, and I mean everyone---- even puppies!
These pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills puppy mill moms and dad’s are treated in the most inhumane manner. I own a puppy mill survivor and he will never be a normal dog because of the abuse he suffered in the mill not to mention that most of these dogs gotten from the puppy mills are sick and they’re not well taken care of at this Manassas pet store. Their water bowls are always empty. Shut them down now.
I have been a lover of animals all of my life. I’ve had dogs since I was 2 yrs old. This breaks my heart when puppies are treated like this. This is unacceptable and we must all do something about this.
I aw the photos of dogs in faeces, water only via bottles ‘guinea pig feeders’ they walk on wire floors so the urine seeps through. They don’t get walked. They have no love. They sell 50 a week! Shelters are full of adoptable pets. We don’t need this barbaric treatment of young puppies. Ban these stores from Prince William County!
Keeping Dogs in glass and metal enclosures - no toys, no beds, nothing soft to lay on, and never taking them outside - is worse than a rescue shelter where at least they have a blanket or bed to lie on and a toy to chew on and are taken outside twice a day. It’s just another form of animal cruelty for money making purposes! Shame on you for allowing this to happen!!
