Protect Sunshine Meadows at the Ag Reserve (Hyder-West Property)

The Issue

Sunshine Meadows is a 174 acre 698 stall facility. It has been a fixture of Palm Beach County's horse industry for decades. The facility's location is easily accessible within minutes of Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Lake Worth. The facility caters to Harness Racing training conditions providing top level conditioning to equine athletes'. The facilities show grounds are built to accommodate Hunters, Jumpers, Grand Prix Dressage and Western Horses & Riders.

Sunshine Meadows serves as a state wide equine Hurricane Shelter. Several trainers coordinate with medical health professionals who refer adults/children with disabilities for Equine Therapeutic Horsemanship. Horse Camps are offered during school breaks for children. Sunshine Meadows is home to the Florida Atlantic University Equestrian Team where they train, organize and sponsor low cost competitive horse shows for riders of all ages.

GL's large-scale land swap plan to build 1250 homes on preserved land would destroy the riding trails that everyone depends on for exercise and enjoyment of nature. Under the plan, GL would give the county land it owns in Indian trails Grove and would build two developments on the Hyder West, near the southern boundary of the Ag Reserve. Since, the property shares boundaries with the Loxahatchee Wildlife preserve; riders can view otters, raccoons, deers, foxes, hawks and other wildlife providing an unique ecosystem to all patrons. This enables a wonderful place for children and teenagers to learn, train, ride, and appreciate nature which is an important aspect for their wellbeing.

On February 2, 2022 GL presented their plan to the Palm Beach County Commissioners. We adamantly demand the Commissioners vote NO! to future proposals to develop at the Hyder West Property. If the Commissioners unprotect this land not only will it cause destruction of the ecology of the property but put undue stress on a treasured Equestrian facility Sunshine Meadows Equestrian Village at 16666 Winners Circle Delray Beach, Florida. GL's plan would tightly surround the facility on three sides and would squeeze the life out of this" unique" horse farm.

If GL receives approval for this disastrous plan the people who have thriving businesses and their employees will have their livelihood is at risk. Many depend on the trail riding business to bring income into the facility. Sunshine Meadows offers affordable quality riding for Palm Beach County residents as compared to a more expensive Wellington venue. Additionally, the reserve provides housing for many of the maintenance staff, grooms, farm labor, restaurant workers, landscapers and many other service workers.

Sunshine Meadows is perfectly positioned in making stabling financially possible for so many people and businesses. Developing and paving over this land destroys a precious Florida resource and delivers a catastrophic impact to the livelihoods of numerous businesses and people. With global warming, rising sea levels and extreme weather events on the increase, we desperately need to preserve every bit of open land and avoid any further development.

We the undersigned say NO! to GL Homes plans for development at the Ag Reserve development West of Boca Raton at State Rd 7.
