Coronavirus School Closures
Petition to Oklahoma State Department of Education, Kevin Stitt, Joy Hofmeister
#OKLAED: Teachers will return to in person school #OnlyWhenItsSafe #VirtualFall
Oklahoma's COVID-19 numbers continue to surge without a mask mandate from Governor Kevin Stitt. Stitt himself has now tested positive for Coronavirus, reporting today in a press conference that [he is] "Not thinking about a mask mandate at all.. You can't pick and choose what freedoms you're going to give people". Some districts in Oklahoma have mandated masks for students and teachers, others are strongly suggesting students and teachers wear them this Fall. Many districts are asking parents to take regular temperature checks at home, and a small percentage of districts are taking it into their own hands to check student temperatures throughout the day. Water fountains won't be available to students, students will have to take group class bathroom breaks to minimize exposure, hallways will be social distanced, school assemblies will not be happening. School supplies cannot be shared, students will be eating in classrooms, social distancing is expected in overcrowded classrooms. Our Oklahoma school districts are seeking out all the hand sanitizer and PPE that they can get their hands on. They're doing everything they can to keep the children of Oklahoma safe, but this still isn't enough. The majority of teachers do not feel safe returning to work this fall, and a sad reality is that 1 out of 4 teachers is at risk from severe COVID-19 (source) This is not okay. Additionally, the CDC has stated "Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have put some members of racial and ethnic minority groups at increased risk of getting COVID-19 or experiencing severe illness, regardless of age." (source) And also, “If children meet in groups, it can put everyone at risk. Children can pass this virus onto others who have an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.” (source) So why are we planning on opening in person education? As of today, Oklahoma has 22,813 known Coronavirus cases and 432 reported deaths. Sure, children haven't been diagnosed as rapidly as adults- but this doesn't stop the spread. It is imperative that ALL Oklahoma schools start in a virtual manner until it is safe to return. This virtual learning also must be more rigorous than previous distance learning trials. Low income families must be provided with a device and free internet access, or school districts should at least allow free drive-up internet access in school parking lots. Teachers must also be allowed to have the freedom to teach beyond just providing worksheets. Overall, we as Educators are asking that the state of Oklahoma begin all Fall instruction VIRTUALLY until the current Coronavirus numbers improve significantly. We as teachers LOVE our students, and we want to be teaching them in person-helping them in every way we can. We also, however, care about the health and safety of our communities. We must stop the spread. OKLAHOMA- please start school VIRTUALLY this Fall until we have more of a handle on the Coronavirus.
Petition to Mayor Bill de Blasio
School building reopening plans must meet safety standards
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s current plan for reopening school buildings does not meet the safety standards our children and school staff need. The UFT worked with the city to develop many of the safety standards included in the reopening proposal, but the mayor’s current plan falls short. For school buildings to reopen, school communities need: Voluntary COVID-19 testing for all students and school-based staff returning for in-person instruction. A rolling testing regimen in every school community for adults and student volunteers to identify those infected with the virus but asymptomatic. The results of these tests should be available within 24 hours. A dedicated group of contact tracers to investigate who else has been exposed when an adult or a student in a school contracts the virus. A school nurse in every school building. Evidence that the protections and procedures outlined in the plan have been implemented, including the testing and upgrading of ventilation systems, and the necessary staff and supplies to deep clean the buildings every night. We cannot contemplate the reopening of New York City’s school buildings unless Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan includes these critical health and safety measures. To do otherwise would be to put our students, their families and school staff in danger and would risk a citywide resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic. P.S. Please DO NOT “chip in” with a donation to Change.org after you sign this petition. The way you can be most helpful is by sharing the petition with others.
Petition to Newport Beach and Costa Mesa Residents
Protect our children in the Newport Mesa School District
Please help protect the health and safety of our communities in general and children in particular. With the Coronavirus spreading both in the U.S. and abroad, we believe it is incumbent for our leaders to take prudent actions to help mitigate the risk to our communities. Schools are a high-risk area for the spread of disease (1), and for this reason we must attempt to mitigate the risk of infection there. Additionally, while the CDC has recommended quarantine for a 14-day period if a person has been in contact with a COVID-19 patient, we now know that the incubation period may extend to up to 24 or 27 days (2) (3). Given the health risks that this pandemic pose to our children, elderly (4), and immunocompromised (5), our leaders should take all appropriate precautions. We, the signatories, request the Newport Mesa administrators follow the most stringent of all protocols with respect to the admission of students that may be carriers of the coronavirus, including: 1) All protocols advised by the CDC, WHO, and other relevant government bodies 2) The below proposed protocols: If a student has traveled to a high-risk area (6) within the past 28 days, or Been in contact with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patient, or Has an immediate family member that is a suspected COVID-19 patient, then: Prior to returning to school, the student most engage in a 28-day quarantine, and Provide the results of a Coronavirus test demonstrating the patient is virus-free. The test must be administered at least 28-days after the last known contact with a potential COVID-19 patient. All protocols are applied retroactively Teachers will electronically provide all relevant school materials to the parents of children who are either under quarantine or are being voluntarily kept at home because of fear of infection. == Citations == 1. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3248433/ 2. https://www.reuters.com/…/coronavirus-incubation-could-be-a 3. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavir…/2019-ncov/about/symptoms.html 4. https://thehill.com/…/485144-coronavirus-fatality-rates-var 5. https://www.fredhutch.org/en/news/center-news/2020/03/coronavirus-what-cancer-patients-need-to-know.html 6. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/after-travel-precautions.html
Petition to Students at university of miami
Change the in class courses to online courses due to the danger of Coronavirus #Umiami
With the increase of Coronavirus Cases in the United States and how its impacting most of the states including Florida it’s necessary to take a serious action about this by making in class courses to online courses to reduce the risk of getting the virus specially that we’re on a spring break and most of the students left to either outside the states or to other states the declared emergency Miami is a multi cultural city and people came from everywhere to spend the break here which also increases the risk of the virus
Petition to MY SCHOOL BOARD, DISTRICT & GOV’T., California Governor, President of the United States, President of USA
Not enough has changed! School is still unsafe.
For Your Kids and Their Teachers!
SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE USA LIKE LAUSD are returning and forcing Teachers and Students to in person school in Now..either full-time or with a hybrid model. This is too soon. The dangers that caused school closures haven’t been abated: They’ve gotten worse. We request: 1) Extended and increased government funds for families to ease their childcare, housing, healthcare and other needs stemming from this crisis- and the need to stay safe at home.2) A Distance Learning model that encourages compliance and participation by being made mandatory- not optional as it was this past semester. 3). A 3 month ‘safe period’ between the decision to return to in person classes and the actually return.. to guarantee the protections from C-19 that officials say may work actually do work because we can observe them at work in all other sectors of society- before we put students, teachers, our children, families and friends at risk.Children’s health should not be gambled away in the name of a hurried and misplaced return to normalcy. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Staying home is the best preventative medicine. Families need government financial assistance to ease the burden of childcare etc.., We urge government to extend payments to families. We urge those in power to continue Distance learning at least through Spring of 2021. Distance learning, will be more effective when the district mandates that the class work is mandatory- not optional as it was this spring. Teachers, ask for more resources for Families and themselves To ensure this. We should feel safe for 3 months straight before we go back to in person learning. The health and hopes of children shouldn’t be hinged on a roll of the dice ‘hoping’ that the virus will go away. The hope of our students future should be founded on the strength of patience, safety and the fortitude of vision necessary to garauntee that no child will catch and die from C-19 at school- because they will be happily learning at home. Just as a family can fully feel safe in knowing that their child won’t contract TB at school- because districts don’t allow anybody with a positive TB test on campus- we request that those we petition refrain from starting in person learning until they can make the same guarantee with respect to Covid-19. Thank you for reading. Please sign, if you agree.. and share.
Petition to St. Charles Parish Council, St. Charles Parish School Board, President Matthew Jewell
SCPHS should NOT go back to full capacity
St. Charles Parish high schools should continue with the hybrid schedule. Going back to full capacity is NOT safe. We want to flatten the curve, NOT raise it. Students in school can not physically socially distance. High schools contain a higher amount of students than other schools, such as elementary and middle schools in our parish, making it extremely difficult to limit close interaction. The classrooms are too small to fit the number of students while remaining 6 feet apart. Students and parents of St. Charles Parish, want to give our say so. We need to make decisions that place our student’s health and well-being as a top priority. The reason for opening to full capacity has even sprung is because COVID-19 cases are decreasing. Taking such actions will only increase the number of cases again. We want to work against this and continue to make a better change for our local cities and the world. To all students, parents, and citizens of St. Charles Parish, please sign if you are in agreement with not opening our parish high schools to full capacity. We will make sure that our petitions will be sent to St. Charles Parish Central Office and SCP School Board. Thank You!
Petition to Milwaukee Public Schools, The Milwaukee Board of School Directors
Reopen All Milwaukee Public Schools!
Since March 16, 2020, Milwaukee Public Schools have been closed. The closing was understandable since the threat imposed by COVID-19 was immeasurable. Nobody knew how deadly the virus was. However, as the months went by, data have shown that children between the age group of 0 - 18 years of age had the least number of fatalities compared to older age groups. In Wisconsin, the age group between 0-18 years of age had suffered no deaths which mean that the threat to COVID-19 is almost nonexistent when it comes to schoolchildren. Online schooling has imposed many challenges to the students of Milwaukee Public Schools. Many have struggle with learning the topics and keeping up with assignments. This is due to teachers not knowing how to use technology. The lack of understanding for technology has made it hard for teachers to help/understand students. Another problem with online schooling is that it doesn't cater to the people who learns hand-on. Many students can only learn when there is teacher giving a lecture on the notes for that specific class. These problems will affect us for years to come. These problems will lead to a lack of understanding in certain school topics and make it hard for us to continue to secondary school/ post-secondary school. These problems will also affect us when we're trying to employ for a job. The employers will not hire us due to our lack of education which is understandable. Lastly, these problems will also affect the economy. The lack of people capable for jobs will cause prices of commodities to go up which will hurt all of us financially. Now I know the worries that many of you may have. What about our parents or the teachers? With enough cleaning and extensive enforcement of mask mandate, I believe that contracting COVID-19 will be kept to the minimal. Again,we have to keep in mind that the virus is only really fatal among people with pre-existing conditions. Teachers who are considered vulnerable to the disease do not have to teach. Parents will not able to contract the disease if the mask mandate is enforced and the school is thoroughly cleaned. Please, Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley, reopen up schools. The students are struggling and the parents are too. We do no want to see our community fail. Many have worked hard before this pandemic and to see a avoidable problem like online learning hindering it is just preposterous.
Petition to Doug Mastriano, Tom wolf, Pennsylvania State House, Pennsylvania Governor, Patrick J. Toomey
Impeach Governor Tom Wolf
Governor Tom wolf has been a disaster for Pennsylvania and Pennsylvanian’s. From his inflammatory rhetoric, to his bad polices, he has destroyed the keystone states. Governor Tom Wolf habitually violates the constitution and ignores the legislative body when it suits him. Under Governor Wolfs administration. Violent crime has increased, homicides have increased, drug use has increased. Children and teenagers have been shot and killed under his leadership. Governor Wolf and Dr Levine’s response to the covid-19 pandemic was heavy handed and a total disaster. They are directly responsible for thousands of nursing home deaths and the destruction of thousands of PA businesses. Dr. Levine moved his mother from a nursing home as soon as the pandemic reached Pennsylvania but order other people’s loved ones to infect others and die alone in a nursing home. For the listed reasons and many more. Governor Tom Wolf must be impeached.
