Protect cyclists and hand cyclists in colorado springs

The Issue

My daughter moved to Colorado Springs to pursue her dreams at the training center, inspired by a life-changing event at the age of 15 when  she woke up unable to walk. Determined and relentless, she found hope and purpose through the training program, which has nurtured countless athletes over the years, giving them a reason to fight. However, the lack of awareness, concern, and education among locals has hindered several athletes from achieving their full potential.

In recent times, the situation has escalated into a crisis. This year alone, two dedicated athletes training for the LA Olympics and Paralympics were tragically run over, left close to death, and unable to race or even train. Their dreams of representing the USA on international platforms are at risk, all due to the hazardous conditions they face on the roads of Colorado Springs. Despite choosing to stay at the training center to focus on their preparation, they are met with grave challenges: inadequate bike lanes, low community awareness, and nonexistent safety measures putting their lives on the line every day.

My daughter, once fearless, is now confined to training indoors, scared to venture onto the roads that should be pathways to her dreams but instead are fraught with danger. Her competitive edge has been drastically affected, and so have the aspirations of many athletes who share her plight. This dire situation calls for immediate action.

We urge the authorities and the community of Colorado Springs to take proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of our cyclists and hand cyclists. Implementing flashing signs, setting up protective barriers, and fostering community awareness are essential measures that can prevent further tragedies and support these hardworking athletes in their quest for excellence.

Let us come together to build an environment where dreams are not shattered by reckless disregard but are nurtured and propelled forward with collective effort and compassion. Sign this petition to make our roads safer and ensure that the athletes training here can reach their full potential on the world stage.
