There are many debates that can be had on how to make our schools safe. I am not here to do that. My goal is to do what we can in the immediate future to help protect our children. Metal Detectors should be at every main entrance of Texas Public Schools. That will help the short term. Long term we can talk about mental illness, anti-bullying campaigns, secure shelters etc. For now lets identify what is being brought into our schools and stop them from entering the building. Lets act swiftly! Lets take that the first step to making school a safe place for our children.

Currently our children are practicing "active shooter drills" much like fire drills and tornado drills. Imagining and practicing what to do when a fellow student enters your room with a gun makes them anxious and feel scared. This is where our society and children are (UNFORTUNATELY) and we have to deal with the fact that this is happening and how to try and stop it. Just like practicing these drills we need to set up detectors and have a school resource officer at the entrance to every school. Not only will these detectors detect an issue, but they could deter it as well.

Eric Weston, chief of police for Boston Public Schools credits metal detectors with keeping firearms out of the schools almost entirely and reducing the number of knives and other weapons in the school building. He said, “[Metal detectors] changed things,” he said. “I would definitely advocate for it.”

Recent New York Police Department data showed metal detectors significantly cut down the number of knives and guns that were smuggled into the city’s public schools.

Metal detectors are not the End all Solution but can be an immediate action and small portion, of what needs to be, a school safety overhaul. We all agree something has to change but what are we doing TODAY to make that happen? What are you doing? Sign this petition.
