"Don't Stop The Music": Demand Fair Payment for Artists from Streaming Services
The Issue
Picture your go-to anthem from high school or that unforgettable tune from a film that gives you chills. Now, close your eyes and let those tunes wash over you. It's likely that a wave of cherished memories has come rushing back, all tied to those songs. Music possesses an incredible ability to whisk you away, reshape your emotions, and weave itself into the very fabric of who you are.
Music, to me, is more than just an auditory pleasure—it’s a therapeutic release and a crucial companion in my life. My personal connection with a hip-hop artist has further cemented this understanding of music’s invaluable significance. However, I am deeply disturbed by the current practices of streaming services that don’t adequately compensate the artists who work tirelessly to create this music.
As per a study by Citigroup, majority of the online music revenue ($43 billion in 2017) goes to middlemen like streaming services, with only 12% finding its way to artists themselves (Source: CNBC report, August 2018). This gross disparity fuels an industry that lives off the talents of individuals but fails to reward them fairly. Artists are the heart and soul of every song that moves, excites, or soothes us, and it’s high time we respect their contribution.
This is a call to demand all major streaming platforms to review their payment structures and implement a fair revenue-sharing model. Artists should not merely survive, but prosper from their music. It's time we harmonize the scales of justice in the world of music. Please lend your support and sign this petition.
I'm calling on members of congress to do the right thing and help the artists out. Music means so much to everyone, just think of the younger generation. The ones who might not follow a dream of a musical career BECAUSE the pay is not worth it. A world without music would be far too depressing!
