Rashida Harbi Tlaib, born in 1976, is an American politician and lawyer serving as a U.S. Representative from Michigan since 2019. As a member of the Democratic Party, she represents Michigan's 12th Congressional District as of 2023. Tlaib is notably the first Palestinian American woman and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. Her early political career includes serving in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Tlaib holds a Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and a Juris Doctor from Western Michigan University. Before her congressional service, she worked as an attorney with the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice. Her career is marked by her advocacy for progressive policies and community service.
