As a speech pathologist supporting NDIS participants in regional and rural areas, I feel genuinely disheartened by the recent changes to the Price Guide regarding travel. These changes place an unfair burden on the very people who already struggle the most to access consistent, quality allied health services. Rural communities deserve the same opportunities for communication, connection, and independence as those in metropolitan areas. Limiting our ability to claim travel time fairly makes it harder for us to reach the people who need us most. It feels like our rural clients are being left behind, and that’s simply not okay!

We need to support female medical professionals to be able to keep their business running with rising inflation so they can continue to provide therapy for our most vulnerable

My son was born at 28 weeks and has had the use of funding through the NDIS early. Through early intervention we have seen so much improvement in him. Without allied health, in the private sector, we would not have been able to access services for early intervention. It gave us the choice and control to find a provider with the experience we needed after having bad experiences when we initially had to use specifically funded services where there was no choice or control.

My daughter has complex speech difficulties and it’s already so hard to find experienced paediatric speech therapists who have availability. Please don’t make it even harder by reducing their incentive to stay in the industry! Our kids need speech therapists and we need the government and NDIA to value their services, both through pay and policies.

As a working speech pathologist, the stagnant NDIS hourly rate is hurting my career and ability to provide best practice to my clients.

Our speech therapist has helped our daughter over the past two years and we still have more to go - hoping we can continue travel to her kinder at a reasonable cost for extra sessions as it all helps!

Speech pathologist provide support and services that are vital for families and individuals to do exactly what the NDIA set out to do… improve access and participation in their communities. Attrition of clinicians out of the NDIS is real and will continue if pricing caps remain at their current level. Families already endure long waitlist to access services. This will continue to be a barrier with fewer clinicians. Targeting the clinical workforce to reduce NDIS spending is shortsighted and misinformed.

I am a speech pathologist with a small team of speechies. We currently offer many mobile services. There is a high demand for speech pathology services in our area with many having no availability and closed waiting lists. Offering mobile services enables us to visit children in their homes, kindergartens and schools. This is especially helpful as after-school appointments are very popular and rarely available. It allows us to still see children in the day when their parents are often busy working and we're unable to offer them after-school appointments. The cut in travel cuts does not make it viable for our team to continue to travel to appointments, which reduces access to speech pathology services for many clients. Wages, rental and other costs do not reduce each year, but on the contrary rise, so reducing our travel fee only makes it harder to sustain a business and ultimately a profession where so many therapists are at risk of burnout.

As a parent of a nurodiverse child , I'm thankful every day for the help and guidance we get from our speech therapist, it has greatly helped with his social skills , pay these people in line to all other industries, increase wages or we will see a large reduction in this profession which in turn puts a greater impact on mental health sector.
