Survival of the Bega Saleyards
The issue
The Bega Valley Shire council decision to re-zone vacant land that adjoins the Bega Saleyards current site, threatens the future of the Bega Saleyards. A call for action from the above decision-makers is needed now, as the re-zoning is due to take effect from late in 2026 Ref; BVSC website.
The Bega saleyards generate more than $25 million per annum in livestock’s sales, which significantly boost the local economy.
The National saleyards standard state that saleyards cannot be built near a residential area, which the BVSC re-zoning would impact the future of the saleyards at its current location.
It is estimated that half the regional saleyards have closed in the last 20 years.
The saleyards provide a regular venue for social interaction, which vital important for the social wellbeing of our farming community, and is confirmed by the MLA {Social value of saleyards report 2022}
We ask the local and wider communities to sign this petition. There will be an online petition that will be available through the Bega Beef Co op FB page from the 18th of July 2025 where you can sign and then share to your contacts, please.
We, the undersigned, ask the local and wider community to sign and share this petition, to provide momentum of one voice that is backed by thousands of supported signatures. Our target is 10,000 signatures.
This petition is from primary producers, business owners and residents of the Bega valley and the surrounding regions.
We request that the Bega Valley Shire Council and NSW Government take all necessary steps to ensure the LONG-TERM SURVIVAL of the Bega Livestock Saleyards.
