Like many we're left in the lurch by this backflip. The promise that schemes would be stackable was part of my reason for voting for a returned Albo government. Did not expect that Minns would take this as an opportunity to claw back some money and leave so many households and installers caught out. It's outrageously bad politics that undermines trust in the new Albo goverment and the Minns government (who is up for election in a little over 18 months. There is still time to change this. Heck, even just make good on the promise to those caught up in this and grandfather it at the end of 2025. Anything would be better than this total bait and switch.
Paid for 15KW + 24Kw battery install AFTER the federal rebate announced, in good faith, and not wanting to cancel on RenewCo (negative for their business) I went ahead and installed late May - left batteries not commissioned until 1st July. As I received the NSW grant – (and recent govt update NOW they are not stackable) I am no longer eligible for the federal rebate - a loss of over $10K. What a govt screw up! Minns promised new install after the announcement would be eligible! But now I am not. This was a very public lie to NSW residents trying to do the right thing and not cancel orders on small businesses!! No wonder electricity generation is a shamble in Australia.
With both Federal and NSW battery rebates, it is yes for a solar battery. Without both, combined, it is a no from me. In case the NSW Government have forgotten - there's a cost of living crisis. You had committed to the rebate before the May Federal Election - so just update the legislation and get it done. The outcome of this WILL be remembered at the next State election - I promise you.
Based on comments made by Labor prior to the election, we understood that the federal+state rebates were stackable, and so we proceeded with our battery purchase and paid a deposit. Now at the last minute we find out that the state rebate is being cancelled and we have to find the extra cash from somwhere, or otherwise if we cancel our order then we lose our deposit.
I read the expression “bait and switch” in someone else’s comment and immediately identified that’s exactly how I feel. My decision had always been not to have a solar battery due to cost but the combined federal and state rebates offered as a combined deal made it a financial possibility, as I’m sure it did for many people. To pull the rug from under existing contracts that can’t be installed before a sudden deadline etc is very unfair. If the rebate was to be withdrawn then at least some consideration should be given to making the timing of it more reasonable to both businesses and customers. Nothing about this seems like acting with integrity or giving us “a fair go”… it fails “The Pub Test” rather badly! I suggest anyone reading my comments and agreeing should write to their member of parliament!
