The Vaults is my go to place in Oxford since 2006 for fab food, drinks, ambience and setting. There isn't another café in Oxford to rival it. The reasonably-priced, healthy, seasonal, local, organic food chimes with my own values and I've introduced it to my husband, family, and friends from elsewhere, who all love it, too. I find a curious inner calm there amongst the town, gown and tourist hubbub and it will always be my number one place - my life would be much the poore were it to disappear. I've yet to come across a vicar who behaves in accordance with the kind of values I associate with the church. Will Pouget, his hard-working team of 20+ years, and all the capital investments he has made, do not deserve this crappy treatment, that's been ongoing now for around 5 years. The Vaults is a main draw for locals, students, and tourists alike in the centre of town. It is worth around £400k and brings in £100k a year plus visitors for St Mary's, who pay £10k in rent to the university. It's a no-brainer - hands off the Vaults!

In this cafe, I've talked friends through heartbreaks, had rousing research debates, and enjoyed a quiet afternoon with a book. It is one of the prettiest and most collegial places in Oxford, and I cannot imagine the town or the university without it. I hope the church leadership will read these comments and understand how important the cafe is to so many people.

It was the outstanding reputation and commitment of the Architecture at the University of Plymouth, especially the guidance and international perspective of my supervisors that inspired me to choose Plymouth for my doctoral studies. Their mentorship has been the foundation of my academic here. If they are forced to leave, I honestly do not know how I would continue or where I would turn. The loss of such dedicated and experienced supervisors would not only jeopardize my own research progress but also shake the very reason I came to this university.

My daughter's dream was to live and study abroad, and she chose Plymouth for her arts degree and found a place there. How can she finish her degree if the courses she needs don't exist anymore?! Do you know what a hardship it is for international students to get there in the first place, and now she may have to switch schools? The world needs art and artists more than ever now.

I got to know many members of staff in the arts when I was a postdoc in social sciences at Plymouth. I was horrified to learn of the planned programme closures. One of Plymouth’s greatest assets as a city is its concentration of artists and performers. Staff in the arts at the University of Plymouth are a huge part of what makes the Plymouth special, bringing vitality to a place that has a lot of economic and social challenges. Plymouth University staff are at the core of the city's LGBT programming and its independent theatre scene, and a University of Plymouth staff member was recently the city's poet laureate. Redundancies and closed arts programmes are a disaster for both staff, whose lives are being turned upside-down, and for the students who come to the University of Plymouth for its excellent arts education. But it’s no understatement to say that this is also a disaster for Plymouth as a whole, not only because of the economic effects of job losses and reduced student numbers, but also because of losing a cultural anchor that contributes so much to the life of the city.

The arts scene in Plymouth has grown significantly during the past decade, and UoP has contributed to this explosion of culture through its various courses. Doing away with these course - and disinvesting from the arts having spent so much money not only on course, but on facilities such as The House and Levinsky Gallery - is a false economy and is extremely short-sighted.

As someone who's worked for years to bring arts and humanities programming to engineering and technical students, I have seen the difference that this perspective makes in a largely STEM education. No administration should be managing budgets with short-sighted cuts that reduce student access to arts and humanities courses or experiences. To quote one of my recent students, an engineer, "the one thing I refuse to give up in a dire time like this is my humanity. Why do we have to take arts as STEM majors? Because your humanity doesn’t end as soon as you enter the workforce”.

Disgusted that Chi seems to align itself with the ridiculous rhetoric espoused by previous right-wing governments about the arts being “useless”. Creative industries deserve respect, creative workers and graduates deserve respect. As an arts graduate of this university myself, I’m deeply ashamed of Chichester’s unethical cost-cutting measures. I advise the uni to take a long, hard look at themselves and what this decision says about their institution’s beliefs. On a more practical note, it will be immensely difficult to fund more expensive science courses without the excess tuition money from cheaper arts degrees, we all know now that’s how it works. I look forward to the university re-evaluating this decision and reinstating their reputation. This world would be nothing without art.

i honestly have no idea what chi think they’re doing with this decision. not too long ago they spent an inordinate amount of money on building the tech park and making it cutting edge, and now they’re skimping resources to give the newest load of people crumbs. when my class had an issue with a specific teacher, we were able to speak in depth with an HOD who knew what that teacher was saying was factually incorrect and why. i can guarantee you that combining HODs in this way will result in higher and more taxing workloads for the HODs, and the students will not have any way to get help in the ways they need. it would be the equivalent of asking an english teacher about colour theory. they might know something, but it will not be in their wheelhouse, and it will ultimately not help the students. i am seeing this kind of action in my current workplace as well (not arts related) and i assure you it is not helping management or the employees and no one is happy. it won’t work. do something right. focus on the experience of the young adults walking through the doors. not your bottom line.

Welsh history is important, and a campus as deeply rooted as this doesn't deserve to be erased like so much of Welsh history has been!
