The Issue

We are calling on the Lancaster University Students’ Union (LUSU) to refuse affiliation to the Reform UK Society in its current state, until it can demonstrate sustained compliance with LUSU’s Code of Conduct and equality obligations.

Lancaster University and LUSU have clear commitments to equality, diversity, and inclusion, as outlined in the LUSU Code of Conduct/Practice and the university’s Dignity in Student Life principles. These policies emphasise that all student groups must promote a respectful, welcoming, and non-discriminatory environment.

Unfortunately, members of the Reform UK Society’s leadership have repeatedly failed to meet these standards.

  • Removing opposition posters from campus boards - a direct attempt to suppress free expression
  • Posting discriminatory content in university group chats and public social media
  • Making students feel unsafe or unwelcome, leading to formal complaints being submitted to the University

This petition is not about banning political opinions - it's about holding student societies accountable for behaviour that undermines the safety and dignity of our community.

The Freedom of Speech (Higher Education) Act 2023 protects lawful expression - but it does not require student unions to affiliate with, fund, or endorse groups whose conduct breaches harassment or equality standards.

We demand that:

  • Refuse affiliation to the Reform UK Society unless it demonstrates clear and sustained change
  • Require any future application from this group to include an action plan, internal governance reforms, and a public commitment to respectful engagement
  • Reaffirm that student societies which promote hate, hostility, or discrimination through their conduct — not just their views — have no place on our campus

Lancaster deserves better than hate dressed as free speech. Protect our campus!
