Subject: Request to Retain the Name of Barkatullah University, Bhopal

Respected Sir/Madam,

We, the undersigned citizens of India, students, alumni, teachers, advocates, researchers and concerned members of society, respectfully express our opposition to the proposed renaming of Barkatullah University, Bhopal.

Barkatullah University carries the name of Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali, a distinguished son of India and a fearless freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the struggle against British rule. His contribution to the cause of Indian independence is a matter of national pride and historical record.

Universities are not merely buildings; they are institutions that preserve collective memory, intellectual heritage and historical identity. For decades, Barkatullah University has stood as a tribute to a freedom fighter whose sacrifice transcends political, religious and regional boundaries.

The proposed change of name raises a larger question: Should the names of those who fought for India's freedom be removed from public institutions that were established to honour them?

We believe that:

Freedom fighters deserve lasting recognition and respect.

Historical institutions should retain their established identity.

National heroes should unite society rather than become subjects of erasure.

Any decision affecting a public university's identity should involve broad public consultation.

This petition is not against any individual, ideology or community. It is a humble appeal in favour of preserving history and honouring those who sacrificed for India's independence.

We therefore request the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the Hon'ble Governor to reconsider the proposal and ensure that the name Barkatullah University continues to be preserved for future generations.

History should be remembered, not renamed.

Freedom fighters should be honoured, not forgotten.

This petition is not against any person, community, ideology, or institution. It is a peaceful democratic appeal to preserve the legacy of a freedom fighter and protect an important chapter of India's history.
We respectfully urge the Government of Madhya Pradesh and all concerned authorities to retain the name Barkatullah University, Bhopal, and uphold the memory of a son of India who dedicated his life to the nation's freedom.

History should be remembered, not erased.
