I strongly support the competitive environment that allows residents to choose their own refuse removal company. I personally chose Garby because they are a locally owned small business. Garby provides excellent service. This company, and others like it, deserve to have local government leaders encourage them to continue and grow their operations, not conspire to put them out of business in order to favor a large corporation.
I strongly oppose Fairfax County’s plan to create a unified sanitary district for trash collection. This move would eliminate competition, hurt small, family-run haulers, and take away our right to choose a service provider we trust. I’ve received reliable, personalized service from my current hauler for years — something a centralized system simply can’t offer. Please protect local jobs and small businesses by allowing residents to retain control over their trash collection choices.
I started with Republic since they were the primary provider for our community. It was fairly expensive and the rates kept going up, so I switched to American. That saved me over $60 per quarter, but the service was very unreliable. They missed the first two pickups after I signed up with them, and I had to call at least once or twice per quarter for missed pickups. With Garby, I'm paying less that I did with American, and Garby has not missed a single pickup since I started with them four months ago. If the county insists on taking over trash collection, they must consider the reliability of the companies that they are considering.
Republic Services is ok, but they now only pick up once a week and we don’t have any easy alternatives. I’m a big fan of competition. There is no incentive to provide better service if there are only two choices!
The last thing I want is to have to return to garbage collection by one of the large haulers. Garby has provided much better service at a lower cost. And, just as importantly, it is clear that the company cares about our community.
Been with Garby since early 2023 and never looked back. From the first day when I had the pleasure to speak with Phillip when he dropped off my bins I was impressed with his desire to deliver a community service at a reasonable rate while supporting his young family, he impressed me even more when I saw him personally working the route and hustling in and out of the truck to get the job done. We need more people like Phillip who take pride in their work and community.
The county is claiming that this would help them with their waste initiatives - where is the evidence of this? What this really represents is a clear attempt by the county to address their $292.7 million deficit by taking over trash collection.
And who really pays for this? The citizens who finally found a disposal service (Garby!), run locally and focused on their customers. I have no interest in going back to the horrible, non-local (American and Republic) options.
I had been stuck using a different provider in my area for almost four years and every year had an increase that felt egregious with the same service and not so great communication.
When garby was finally servicing our area, I had already read of good reviews of their service and great communication. Not to mention a significant decrease in the amount I have to pay per quarter.
While I understand these larger companies need to make money every year, I'm more than willing to support a small business who is trying to also support the community with reliable service.
Please do not take away our CHOICE for who to use as a provider. My previous trash service missed pickup days regularly and the only option for our pickup day was Friday, which doesn't work if you want to leave for the weekend.
Fairfax County BOS appears to have a solution in search of a problem. In all my years living in the county never once have I heard or heard of anyone pining for the county to take over trash, recyclables and yard waste pickup. Our property taxes (mine went up 11% last year!) are already sky high without the cost of the county building out and sustaining all the staff it will take to manage their stupid USD. Their survey only captured about 5000 responses out of a 1.16 million county population, and neither I nor anybody I know even heard that there was a survey. Looks to me like a survey built and executed to obtain the county's preferred outcome so as to give themselves a fig leaf of legitimacy for their proposed strongarm takeover.
In my case, Garby Disposal Services has been a Godsend...great service, responsiveness and my bill went from $160 a quarter with Republic (the big, bloated nationwide corporation) to $96 a quarter with Garby.
The bottom line is our freedom to choose the company we wish to hire for these services. If you like Republic or American or whichever service you use, you can continue to use them. If you don't like them for any reason you can switch to a competitor. This freedom disappears once the county takes over.
