Sovereign rights are a crucial and contentious issue globally, as nations seek to assert their autonomy and self-determination. Recent events have highlighted challenges to sovereign rights, from territorial disputes to international agreements impacting national sovereignty. Petitions under this topic address a range of issues, including advocating for indigenous land rights, opposing unfair trade agreements, and supporting self-governing territories.
One notable petition calls for the protection of indigenous sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of respecting ancestral lands and traditions. Another petition urges governments to prioritize national interests over international corporations, citing examples of harmful exploitation of resources.
Join the movement to uphold sovereign rights and empower communities to assert their autonomy. By supporting these petitions, you can contribute to preserving cultural heritage and safeguarding the rights of nations worldwide.
It's ridiculous that, after all we have done to the people who were here before us, where the Native voices that our forebears attempted to obliterate and silence over more than several centuries are STILL being marginallized, even by the so-called "liberal" people, the Governor of this so-called liberal state is supporting the Johnny-come lately millionaires over the native people of this land. I stand with the Shinnecocks.
I am a member of the Shinnecock Nation. It is a disgrace that in 2024 we still have to fight for equality and the ability to support ourselves economically! Should we talk about what has unlawfully been stolen from us? Suppression continues to happen in many forms, and this is one of them...shameful.
Local towns clamping down on the tribes right to economic development is absolutely the most absurdly ironic and openly discriminatory thing to have happened in local government history in my lifetime. This is something that will be seen as an embarrassment, an example of blatant injustice, by future generations.
These recent escalations are part of a pattern of the Town of Southampton & the State of NY utterly disrespecting & disregarding the autonomy of the Shinnecock Nation to decide what should be done on *their* land. The Town of Southampton has, also, still not ceded Shinnecock Hills to the Shinnecock Tribe (which, hence the name, should be a no-brainer.) This is largely because the lucrative Shinnecock Hills Golf Course now occupies that land (and was built over tribal burial grounds.) I believe wholeheartedly in the right of the Shinnecock Tribe to move forward with these projects to support their economic prosperity. Please support this petition!
I stand in solidarity with the people of The Shinnecock Nation in the ongoing fight for recognition, preservation, and restoration of our rightful lands. Our heritage, culture, and connection to the land deserve respect and protection. It is imperative that the injustices of the past are addressed, and our sovereignty and rights are upheld.
I support the call for justice and hope that this collective voice contributes to lasting change for our community and future generations.
In solidarity and respect,
Tribal Member of the Shinnecock Nation,
Gordon Lewis Smith Jr.
Government has overstepped far too much. The Shinnecock Nation has more than a right to prosper off of their own land. The “Hamptons” would be it’s authentic self without the city people and governments taking over and trying to ruin our beaches, swamps, oceans, woods and the glory that all who have been born and raised here call home. If a billionaire can redevelop a house on Gin Lane and sell it for $400mm, why can’t the Natives of our great South Fork have the opportunity to prosper and keep the their heritage alive. “Not in my backyard?” —- that apparently doesn’t apply to the houses by Coopers or the $600mm home half finished. What about the pesticides and chemicals that are polluting their bay, the ocean and the water supply. Everyone has the right to prosper. It’s a constitutional right. The people in this community, in my community, would rather take their land, than to see a brown person whose land was stolen make money.
The Shinnecock people have been the care takers of the land since time immemorial. The Shinnecock have contributed to the development and evolution throughout history since first contact with settlers. The Shinnecock have withstood the politics and racial divide. Creator God blessed the Shinnecock their sacred language, traditions and ways of life. No political agenda/policy will ever exterminate the spirit of the Shinnecock people. Time has proven the Shinnecock will withstand and persevere because Creator God has seen it that way.
