The email sent to the fellow students of the Coeur D’ Alene school district, the school claims to give students more time to do homework with this new rule. Some students need the time before bed to do work- the silent time with a hush in the moment. No siblings to tend to, sports, youth group, things that can’t just be tossed over your shoulder without a care. Some people need the extra time of silence to finish up work. Mind you, unlike older forms of education, half of our work is on our computers. studying, online documents, SKYWARD!
It’s not as easy as it may seem to disregard computers at 10 PM, but as the district claims to want us to do- we have a real life outside of school- trying to live out every minute we can. Sometimes homework isn’t priority! Some people have more responsibilities then most should at our age, but whatever you must say to get yourself to believe that students are gonna truly put a crinkled math paper and some packet of sorts before whay stands more important. Usually I opt for the side of the school, but in this instance, this rule is RIDICULOUS!
We need to let the Chromebooks be open until 12:00 because a lot of people just do not have time immediately after school for homework. I experience this because my family often has me wait until late to do homework, affording me only around 2-3 hours to study and do homework. This time is fully unreasonable, too, because the kids staying up will just go onto different devices. Removing chromebooks doesn't change the variables, it just makes it difficult for those wanting to succeed to do so.
The CDA district holds lots of athletes who have late practices and will get home around 9:30 pm, not only will they not have time to get assignments done in 30 minutes, but it will cause stress to them knowing they now will have a missing assignment or something will be late, making the shut down even a little bit later will help students not feel as overwhelmed with school work. So it is fair to push it back so CDA district students will not feel as stressed.
Half the kids in the school (at the bare minimum) have phones and just use those when staying up late. The other times they are using the chrome books is for working on homework since majority of teachers have us do a packet bi-daily. So I doubt really any kid is using the school Chromebooks for games or whatnot , but rather to catch up on work. And some may argue that we just got home and can work then, well that would be a great idea on paper but allow me to describe a picture. You work a 7-3 job, only 7 hours, not to bad you think to yourself. You walk on in feeling good at your new occupation, it’s a small office job with some friends, enemies, and other folk. Turns out your friends are on the opposite side of the office of you, so you can’t really visit them, “I guess that’s alright…” you think to yourself glumly. It barely seems like the clock has moved and now your enemies are being loud, roughhousing, and obnoxious. You some how manage to suffer through the day with antidepressants and pure will. Turns out, your not done quite yet, you also need to work from home. So you get back to your house, say hi to everyone and take a nap after the hard day, you sleep until 7:00 pm. Now you only have about 3 hours to work. This is essentially what everyday in this school feels like to me. The few minuets I have to focus on relaxing are what keep me from going insane. Then after about 5 minuets of being home I’m back to work. The life and system that has taken place is eat, work, eat lil while working, 5 minuet breather, work, work while eating, work, then finally going to sleep around 12:00. But, if we were able to change this by making it so there is no time gate on the chrome book, that could make life significantly easier and also help us work during those sleepless nights. Thank you for considering this
