I grew up in the Hudson valley and while I enjoyed fishing and swimming in the river I couldn't eat the fish and who knows what damage I did swimming in the unknown poisons the river contains. It would be nice if future generations didnt have to have it that way.Commercial fishermen could earn some wages if the river could be restored to health. Ordinary citizens probably do eat some migrating fish. It would be wonderful if all could enjoy eating fish from this resource. Its a beautiful area, it would be a real boon to tourism if it can be cleaned further and nearer restoration. Please don't give up on it. Please continue to work on solutions to make it healthy once again. Thank you for your continuing efforts.
I have big concerns about reproductive impact of PCB’S on myself and others who grew up in a Pittsfield.many of us have children with serious neurological issues. My father worked for GE and often came home with PCB oil soaked clothes. These were washed at home until one day the employees were told all work clothes were to stay at work and be laundered by the company.
The soiled oiled pcb clothes were put in the washer with the other household clothes and then down the drain into the water system.
This community has been continually & repeatedly exposed to toxins for decades! From workers bringing contamination home on their shoes & clothes to literally years of discovering leaking drums of PCBs around our community to contaminated sand & soil being "donated" to the community for sandboxes and playgrounds 😡 to silver lake being so polluted that it used to fail to freeze over the winter (all the while leaking toxins into the soils and water table) to an obviously polluted Housatonic river that continues to be loaded with contaminated sediment to disposal piles in Lee that literally leak further into into the aquifer located in that area and now dust and particles from demolition. The EPA has absolutely been negligent and has continually refused to hold GE's feet to the fire to clean up their mess. People have been hearing about this issue for years and because of this have become habituated to the true costs. Transparency, education, and accountability are not too much to ask! And once again as so, often is the case this is disproportionately, impacting environmental justice communities! There is absolutely a reason why so many people who could afford to move out of Pittsfield have done so! The only way a community can get what it deserves is to continually demand it! This position shows that our community is still demanding to be heard!
I am writing to express my outrage and frustration regarding the ongoing PCB pollution in Pittsfield, MA, caused by decades of negligence and insufficient action. The contamination left by General Electric has plagued our community for far too long, posing serious health risks to residents and irreversible damage to our environment. Despite promises and cleanup efforts, the region continues to suffer from toxic contamination in its soil, water, and air, leaving a legacy of sickness and despair for families who call Pittsfield home. The EPA's lack of urgency and accountability in addressing this crisis is unacceptable. It is your responsibility to ensure that comprehensive and effective remediation efforts are implemented immediately to restore safety and health to our community. Enough is enough—Pittsfield deserves justice and a future free from this environmental catastrophe.
