As an NYU alum, I am saddened by this institution’s willingness to punish a student who not only earned the right to be valedictorian, but gracefully used this platform to advocate for human rights . NYU is placing itself on the wrong side of history by denying a diploma in order to placate people who support genocide. It’s deeply disappointing, and calls into question the value of NYU degree. If it is simply something that can be taken away when you act with your conscience, tell the truth, and stand against violence, than why should anyone want it?

America has been the land of free speech. Universities should support academic freedom and free speech. Please award the student his diploma. You punish every graduate if you withhold a diploma because of words because we want to believe we have the right to speak out, even when sentiments are unpopular.

As a college student, I am ashamed to know that institutions are implementing such ridiculous acts of censorship. Higher education is supposed to encourage us to think critically and logistically about the world around us. It is not too political or biased to say that starvation should not be used as a war tactic. When we talk about the Palestinian genocide 30 years from now I will remember NYU’s participation and refusal to respect their own students.

Being a Jew, have no love for the Palestinians whatsoever. They have been making bad choices for 70 years.
But as an American, I stand for freedom of speech, even though I oppose what is being voiced.
NYU… Release the Diploma, you are only diminishing our University.
