FIRST Robotics is a topic that focuses on promoting STEM education and fostering innovation through robotics competitions for students worldwide. The program aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and technology by engaging them in hands-on, teamwork-based challenges. With the increasing demand for STEM skills in todays job market, FIRST Robotics plays a vital role in preparing the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
Petitions under this topic often advocate for increased funding and support for FIRST Robotics programs in schools and communities. These petitions highlight the importance of providing students with access to STEM education and robotics opportunities to build critical skills for the future workforce. By signing these petitions, individuals can help ensure that more students have the chance to participate in FIRST Robotics and benefit from its valuable learning experiences. I am a high school senior and student team captain of 8848 Blu Cru, being able to let the students strategize and grow their communication skills is an important part of FIRST and having a mentor/adult on the field can get in the way of the students' learning by experience which I think is the best way to learn. Watching someone do something to learn is fine, but it is 10000x better to try it yourself and learn by doing
Alum of 1506 Metal Muscle, previously scouting captain, intermittant volunteer. Alliance selection was the best (and most exciting/stressful) part of the game for me, and I wouldn't dream of denying or dampening that experience for today's students. There were admittedly a few cases where my list/data didn't cover everything the drive team cared about, leading to some friction; but that is still resolved by a students-only solution
4630. First is what put me on the road I'm on now. It's where I fell in love with engineering. It's necessary that the children understand their voice is important.
I'm not active in FRC, but I am an FTC coach, and I am concerned that we might see the same sort of rule update in subsequent seasons.
It is important that the student members of the team feel empowered. They are (or should be) the ones doing the work to get the bot ready for competition. They should also be the ones choosing which teams they want as allies.
I was a part of the FIRST robotics competition in high school and can certainly say that it played a pivotal role in my enthusiasm for electronics and programming today. This is absolutely the kind of program that I want shaping our future engineers. The students must be in charge of their own team, and in this crucial step of the competition. The empowerment gained from working with your peers to make critical decisions with real consequences is unmeasurable.
I was lucky enough to be on a team where the adult was really just there as a mentor and supporter. I cannot even begin to tell you how proud I was for the robot we created (even though we didn't win), and how proud I was of myself for stepping up to the occasion.
8738. I support this petition because I think this should be about learning and having fun, not about winning over all else. When you put adults on the field, it takes away from the comradery and connection between students.
#159 former cap/driver and my only bad memory of FRC was dealing with overzealous adult "coaches" who let their emotions get the better of them. Let kids participate!
