I am a high school senior and student team captain of 8848 Blu Cru, being able to let the students strategize and grow their communication skills is an important part of FIRST and having a mentor/adult on the field can get in the way of the students' learning by experience which I think is the best way to learn. Watching someone do something to learn is fine, but it is 10000x better to try it yourself and learn by doing

It is important that the student members of the team feel empowered. They are (or should be) the ones doing the work to get the bot ready for competition. They should also be the ones choosing which teams they want as allies.

This is absolutely the kind of program that I want shaping our future engineers. The students must be in charge of their own team, and in this crucial step of the competition. The empowerment gained from working with your peers to make critical decisions with real consequences is unmeasurable.
I was lucky enough to be on a team where the adult was really just there as a mentor and supporter. I cannot even begin to tell you how proud I was for the robot we created (even though we didn't win), and how proud I was of myself for stepping up to the occasion.

When you put adults on the field, it takes away from the comradery and connection between students.
