How does it make sense that the Federal Government is giving this funding to help but our province is just taking the money away as a way to save money? Our son can’t ever participate in life as many know it, the least he can do is have some security and be able to purchase basic needs.
I don't care if only 5 students attend this school! Every child deserves the right to good quality and compassionate education that addresses their needs, just my daughter benefited from (and is now on her way to her dream university!)
We cannot let our tomorrow down.
Whatever the rationale that led to the decision to close this school, think instead of how you can genuinely maximize its potential
All students, especially our beautiful children with exceptional needs & abilities, deserve the right to a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment to help support their unique needs. The TDSB is neglecting these needs with this unfortunate decision. I hope they can figure out how to make this possible & keep this school open.
The Toronto I want to live in supports more schools like Heydon Park that provide caring, tailored, focused resources on vulnerable students, not fewer. SAVE HEYDON PARK!
Our daughter with selective mutism (not to mention a host of other challenges) learned to use her voice and communicate at Heydon Park after many years of no success in earlier grades at other schools. Without a doubt, the staff at this school are one of the main reasons she has blossomed and grown. This would not have happened in a regular classroom even with so called "extra supports".
Shame on the TDSB. This has been a safe place for students who have faces more challenges then most of will ever face in our lives. Heydon is a gem of a school that actually puts the students first. It's about time the TDSB did the same, and not just lip service about supports.Heydon has the supports, the community and the teachers that are changing the lives of their students!
University of Toronto Schools and Heydon Park SS are partnered in a Best Buddies chapter and have been partners for almost 25 years. As a former staff supervisor of Best Buddies from UTS I can't say enough positives about this partnership and program and the many inclusive friendships that have been formed during and after high school years - connection and community so key for our buddies. Grade 9 is a pivotal year to build these friendships and broaden community and support for HPSS students. Losing grade 9 would be a huge loss to our Best Buddies program and to youth with special needs who would miss out on a school that truly builds a sense of belonging and provides much needed supports and resources. These kids so need and deserve a sense of belonging and supportive community!
It gave me the support I needed to recieve a diploma, and go to college.
It is the only high-school that offers free breakfast and lunch to students that is cooked by the STUDENTS!
And the only school that accepts any student regardless of where they live.
It also gives students 3 pathways!
1- non credit for life skills until age 21 so a student can say I graduated high-school who otherwise wouldn't
2. Work helps you get the skills needed for work and recieve a certificate
3. Credit- diploma gives students the oppurtunity to earn a high school diploma with the specialized support that they need
