I currently know 2 people that have been inmates at Westville for over a yr. The conditions there are demoralizing and disheartening! They are served slop, it's either too hot or too cold, there are broken windows and black mold everywhere, illegal activity is encouraged from the staff-it shows gang status/ranking and everyday is a balance between life or death and hoping g that you make it to your release date! Building a new prison is great but there needs to be some serious changes happen! Inmates are still human beings, they should not be treated like rabid animals!
My brother was killed in westville a week ago they called it a suicide and wouldn't help us or provide any details! Also wouldn't give us his belongings!
The prison system as a whole makes entirely too much money housing men and women not to give them better living conditions and just the treatment of them period. Throwing people in cages and treating them less than human is a disgrace and very harmful them to their mental to their self esteem to their health to their spirit. Treat them like humans and maybe them won't come angry and with a savage mentality. Prison is meant to reform them not to tear a person's spirit. I believe the whole prison system needs an overhall
My son was murdered 23 months ago in Gouverneur correctional facility the 200 shu in New York they double bunked him with someone he should not have been with classification wise nor should’ve been double Bunk’d I support everything with this. I’m going for my justice.
As a former CO for ODRC as well as former CO at DYS, I will always show my support for my friends still working for both. Things need to change for my brothers and sisters in Grey! We should not be losing them at the hands of inmates or by their own hands because they aren’t getting the help and resources they deserve! Better pay, earlier retirement & better mental health resources and that is just the minimum of what they need. Make changes and do better for the people inside the fences and gates protecting everyone from what’s inside.
As a former CO of SCI, I fully support my fellow friends who still currently work for ODRC. Every single day all of them put their lives on the line. Corrections officers need better pay. I stand with the grey line🩶.
As someone who is dating someone who works in corrections, I worry daily about if they will make it through their day safely or not. It not only takes a toll on the correction officers but their families as well!
My son is a Corrections Officer and did not sign on for the violence and abuse. He most definitely did not sign on to have his rights as a New York State employee, tax payer, and a productive member of society be violated by his employer and state. When murderers, rapists and child molesters have more rights and our Governor and representatives care more about them than good hard working tax payer and employees our state has failed. Stop puffing up your chest, look at the data and make a decision to do right by our loved ones.
I am from a family of generational corrections officers, many of whom worked at Clinton Correctional among others in the north country. What our governor and the desk tyrants in Albany are doing to our state officers is unacceptable, giving inmates more rights and benefit of doubt than officers who have dedicated lifelong sacrifice and risk to serving and protecting our communities and state. This has to stop!
