Allowing a gun store to set up shop in an area of residential neighborhoods composed of family housing, preschools, and a seniors apartment complex is obviously and wildly inappropriate, to say the least. As residents of this neighborhood, my husband and I demand that the City Council immediately revoke whatever ill-considered permission was granted to site this business in this location. What were they thinking? Selling guns and ammo amongst strolling young families with preschool children on their scooters and older people walking their little dogs? I don't think so. There are other more strictly commercial areas for such an enterprise.
I feel there are better businesses or community forward organizations that would be better suited in this residential neighborhood. One that uplifts the community and helps our neighbors feel safe, not a weapons and ammunitions store which promotes violence and insecurity.
I am not here to interfere with a gun shop in Monterey, but rather to say that they are not appropriate in C1 zoning in the center of a residential neighborhood near a preschool. Would you want this new business directly next to your apartment or house? I'm the mother of a young child and I hate that this will be where he walks and rides his bike. It ruins the wholesomeness and innocence of the neighborhood. Put this business on 10th street, in Ryan Ranch, or in a storefront on Lighthouse (plenty empty ones.)
I’ve lived in the Oak Grove neighborhood for the past 12 years. While I’d be happy to see that location filled, I had never imagined a gun store going in. It doesn’t fit the needs of our community let alone the neighborhood. The space can be better utilized by a business or organization that serves the direct needs of the residents who live right around and above it.
This gun shop is going to be in MY neighborhood, within very close proximity to 2 preschools, a deli, an apartment complex, and many houses where FAMILIES live. I am a college student who walks to school most days. If this gun shop gets approved, I will be too scared to walk to school anymore. I’ll be too scared to walk around my own neighborhood, for goodness sake. Recently, there have been 2 armed robberies involving gun shops elsewhere in the county. Why would we give a residential neighborhood paranoia over the risk of having someone take their life… not to mention their KIDS’ lives? I don’t care if you are pro-gun or not. There are 2 things that everyone in their right mind knows: 1) Guns are DANGEROUS and CAN AND WILL be used in the wrong way, and 2) Gun shops DO NOT belong in residential neighborhoods near preschools. I want my neighborhood to stay safe. I want the young children next door to me to stay safe. All I ask is that the People of Monterey County use common sense: YOU may be okay with guns, but are you okay with children being near guns? Are you okay with preschools being at extremely high risk of being shot up? If you aren’t, be at the City Council meeting on February 18th. SAY SOMETHING. DO SOMETHING. PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. PROTECT THE CHILDREN.
I have been a resident of Monterey for 18 years, and my family was fortunate to purchase our first home on 4th Street in Oak Grove. My wife and I are raising our six-year-old daughter in this neighborhood, and we walk the block past 3rd and Ocean everyday. It is a quiet, safe neighborhood. The only store operating within the interior of Oak Grove is Valnezza’s Market. And Teddy Bear Preschool, on the same block as the proposed gun store. All other retail is on the periphery; along 10th Street, Sloat, or Del Monte Ave. A gun shop should not be a convenience store, and has no place in the middle of a peaceful, family-oriented neighborhood.
I can find no restrictions on the City Government pages about firearms dealers, even though there are myriad restrictions for cannabis is dispensaries and massage parlors. Permitting a gun shop in this location represents poor zoning, and would detract from the neighborhood’s character. It brings down the property values of surrounding homes. It introduces the potential for real hazard, and the clientele brings unwelcome energy. If anything, it should be subject to the same restrictions as a cannabis dispensary. Similar businesses operate along commercial corridors (N. Fremont, Lighthouse, or Foam Street), but not within the interior of a residential neighborhood. I can think of no comparable neighborhood where a store like this would be considered or welcomed.
I hope you will hear the concerns of myself and other residents in Oak Grove.
We ask that you help to preserve the character of our historic neighborhood and protect it as a safe place to raise our family.
I live very near this area, and have always imagined the city promoting the tiny shopping section as a gathering for coffee shops, clothing, art galleries, ceramic shops and other shops that would draw people to enjoy and linger in the area. A gun store would do entirely the opposite. It is absolutely wrong. The store is exactly beside where people live. It's near day cares, it's near tourist attractions and the beach. It's unbelievable that it is even considered. I know it would impact property values in the area. I can't imagine how it even got considered.
I am a father of three, the oldest of whom is not yet in kindergarten. The proposed site of this shop sits on a street with a deli in one direction and a preschool in the other. And another preschool three blocks north of that. And another preschool and children's playground about a 1/4 of a mile from that. I think we could do better than a gun shop in our backyard. I am a veteran of the us military and have no issue with ownership of firearms. I am not one myself, but to each their own. For the sake of my children and what is immediately around them, a pistol or rifle is not what I would like them to see through a glass window on their walk to the deli for an ice cream bar. Would you?
I live very close to this location and walk by it frequently. I envisioned a yoga studio, coffee shop / cafe, community gathering space - Never would I have expected a gun shop. This is a beautiful, peaceful family neighborhood - there are so many other commercial spaces that would be more appropriate for a gun shop. I'm surprised that the business own wouldn't consider a location where it would be more successful and not invite the concerns of the community. Unfortunately, we were not engaged in advance of the decision - I'm hopeful that our concerns will have some influence at this point.
