My best friend has owned a world renowned local glass shop for 15 years. He buys beautiful artwork from local & nationwide artists (never China). The creativity & time put in on these works of art is substantial. However, he & the artists already do not make a lot of money. By requiring these licenses & the additional taxes, many people will lose their livelihood! This highly skilled art could be lost forever. People will buy inadequate & possibly toxic glassware from China, taking revenue away from the US & putting people at risk by using toxic products. Please do not pass this legislation. Save the glass community!!
Pipemaking is an ancient american tradition. Long before this land was called America (or Iowa) the people who lived here made deeply meaningful creations in many forms- one form being pipes. All cultures need significant objects. We are not rich men making pipes. We are single people, often, working other jobs and working hard just to make what we do on glass. It is not commonly a lucrative business at all for the people using high quality materials with high standards of work. Chinese labor and Chinese products are a fraction the cost of american labor and goods. It is illegal and immoral to equally tax Iowan residents that make glass pipes artistically to corporations that are unethically using chinese labor to produce pipes on a mass scale.
Pipes have become so much more than just a piece of drug paraphernalia. Some of us have spent decades honing our craft, furthering the medium of glass, and contributing to our communities in various ways through sharing our creativity and techniques, gatherings and art shows, and also spending our incomes in the local economy. A 40% tax on anything is absurd, and the people of Iowa should vehemently say no to this tax!!
