My grandfather left Barbados for Panama in the early 1900s. When I visited Barbados as an adult, and my passport was checked at customs-- they saw my last name, Inniss, and said "welcome home". I have tears in my eyes writing this because my name is so rare wherever I go. I never felt so much belonging before. I hope the Barbados government will make the change, and allow the diaspora to come home.
My child is a grandchild of a Barbadian born citizen and every year we are told legislation will change so he can become a citizen by descent.
Still the legislation is not in place. Sigh!
I want to get citizenship through descent from my great grandmother that was born in Christ Church Barbados in 1902. I have all the documents to prove that. I wanna connect with my heritage. I hope Barbados makes that change soon.
