PERMIT ENTRY OF TRAFFIC TO CHAPEL STREET, SPEIGHTSTOWN FROM K.N.R. HUSBANDS HIGHWAY

PERMIT ENTRY OF TRAFFIC TO CHAPEL STREET, SPEIGHTSTOWN FROM K.N.R. HUSBANDS HIGHWAY

The Issue

On Wednesday 22nd March 2023, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources implemented numerous changes to traffic flow in Speightstown, St. Peter without prior consultation with residents and business owners.

In particular, One of these changes i.e. No Entry to Chapel Street has resulted in a complete diversion of economic activity and has proven to be an inconvenience to many residents, businesses and customers.

Resolution

Whereas Speightstown is critical to the economy, culture and heritage of Barbados

And whereas a traffic plan for Speightstown is essential to ensure the smooth flow of traffic into and through the town

And whereas Speightstown has a number of residents who live and work in the town

And whereas Goddings Alley will now be the sole access road to upper Chapel Street ; and said Goddings Road and Mango Lane, two very narrow roads, will now be the accesses to lower Chapel Street

And whereas the negotiation of the street through the narrow roads of Goddings Alley and Mango Lane is difficult for large vehicles

And whereas the ability to serve the businesses in Chapel Street will be compromised because of the difficulty posed to large delivery vehicles

And whereas the inability of the businesses on Chapel Street to receive adequate service will severely impact their profitability

Be it resolved that we request that entry from KNR Husbands Highway to Chapel Street return to the status quo ante by removing the NO Entry signs.
