I’m writing to expose the dire conditions soldiers face in Army barracks, including black mold, sealed windows, and a lack of enforceable standards from the Department of Defense. After returning from deployment, I found mold buildup on my belongings and living quarters—proof of what we’re breathing in daily. During my time in the barracks, I developed respiratory issues so severe my parents sent me my childhood inhaler for relief. Cardio PT became a struggle due to wheezing and coughing, and sleeping was nearly impossible. My air conditioning was broken for six months, forcing me to prop my door open for airflow because the windows were sealed shut. The Army’s quick-fix solutions like “wipe the vents” are bandaids, not real answers. Soldiers deserve clean, safe living conditions—it’s time for leadership to stop ignoring this crisis and take action.

My grandfather served our country, He was also an army ranger & he fought in Vietnam he was an amazing man so selfless and courageous. He was and always will be my hero. He would be absolutely appalled just as I am to know our men and women are living in these conditions when they risk their lives for us everyday, they deserve so much more ! The least you can give them is somewhere clean and comfortable to lay their heads at night !!! I’m disgusted. Hang in there guys.😔

I would be heartbroken if budget cuts kept students from the same opportunities I had during my IU tenure. Now, more than ever, we need strong journalism.
