A reasonable expectation of any person who lives within one mile of a school in the same zip code as their address is to not be redistricted to a school significantly farther away in a completely different zip code. We live 0.9 miles from DES. In AACPS' redistricting scenarios 1,2, and 3 students who live approximately five times farther away from DES and being redistricted INTO DES while we are redistricted out. In order for the students being redistricted into DES to access the school, they will have to drive past our house each school day. It is highly illogical to redistric children within walking distance of a school only to add children from farther away who then have to drive through the redistricted area to attend school.

We have close friends with a little one impacted by this questionable redistricting. This will prevent this little guy from going to the same school as our daughter who’s the same age. We’ve been looking forward to them growing closer as classmates and the positive impact our combined parenting can have on their future and within our community.

We sympathize with the AACPS’s desire to modify district lines, but all three of the scenarios proposed are extreme and fail to meet their stated goals. Scenario 1, which may have been fashioned to stake out a “worst case,” thereby increasing the likelihood of Scenarios 2 or 3 passing, appears to completely disregard the existence of the town of Davidsonville. It tears Davidsonville in half, as if it were not a community at all. The purported priority of “utilization” is a construction and quality issue, caused by adults. It is better solved by improved planning and staff recruiting, not by shuffling kids to compensate for adult lapses. Scenario 2 purports to minimize travel distances. Yet it features an obvious incursion into the Davidsonville community, in our case causing our own young children to travel 32% further, through a deadly intersection. Some students in this scenario, who live about 1 mile away from DES, would not be traveling 4 or more times further to CES. How does this optimize travel efficiency, as stated on its face? Scenario 3 has a similar issue to Scenario 1, and completely disregards the existence of our vibrant community of Davidsonville. It is “prioritizing assignment stability” of disrupted elementary school bonds, broken community, and missed opportunity for lifelong friendships.

The whole thought of send kids to schools that are further away is just crazy to me. This is why many of us move to this area. When will the safety of our children be considered.

Keep kids at their neighborhood school in davidsonville. Davidsonville elementary is not at capacity so why would you take kids out of their community? This makes no logical sense. It is important socially for kids to have easy access to their school within their community where their friends live and where they can easy access their school to participate in afterschool activities. Moving them will make it hard for all of their caregivers as well to retrieve them, to allow them to partake in afterschool activities or to socialize. The new boundary makes no logical sense. Leave Davidsonville kids at Davidsonville Elementary.

This change impacts our community by separating children who have grown up together. In addition, my som has been on the same high school team for 3 years and will now be in a different high school and not sure if he will even make the team of his new school. These changes should not effect high schoolers that no not wish to switch hs sports team. This is a major change that they should be able to control their last 2 years of high school! Talk about equity, whole child, and doing what is best for students! It shouldn’t always be about the boundary lines or the political decisions. What is best for the child?

Taking Davidsonville kids out of Davidsonville Elementary is nonsensical. This would at least double busing time in order to avoid a deadly intersection, which in turn, increases the costs to the county/state. Davidsonville is a small community and its children should not be ripped out of their community elementary school and transplanted into multiple neighboring city’s elementary schools.

We live in the town of Davidsonville. This year I have one child in DES, a 1st grader with special needs, and next year I will have another child starting 1st grade there. My son, currently at DES, has made so much progress in the past 2 years at DES and I am very concerned about the disruption to his education. My child going into 1st grade next year will be coming from a small private kindergarten this year into a much larger school at DES next year only to make friends and be transferred to another school the following year. She sometimes has problems making new friends and I am very concerned doing 3 schools in 3 years will affect her academically and diminish her love of school and learning as well.
