One year I vacationed in California and I went to a bar to use the restroom. As I was leaving I noticed a breathalyzer machine on the counter with a sign that invited you to feel free to check your blood alcohol level before you left. Ever since I saw that I thought to myself why can’t every establishment that serves alcohol be required to keep one of these compact machines in their bar and if you have partaken of an alcoholic drink you are required to breathe into it before leaving if you are the driver. Or if you are with a group then only the person or persons who pass the breathalyzer can be among those who are given the go ahead to bring the car around and take the rest of the passengers who have not passed the breathalyzer home, or a cab or rideshare can be called for them.
There can be a system where you have to give up your keys like you would to a valet when you enter bars, clubs, or if you choose to order alcohol at a restaurant, and you do not get your keys back until you have passed the breathalyzer.
People have the right to partake of alcohol which we know impairs judgment and the ability to drive. No one disputes this fact. However everyone else also has the right to not have to share the road with people that are driving drunk (which is the equivalent of holding a gun on the road and blindly shooting at cars).
This is an easy thing to implement and the responsible thing to do. The next person who dies at the hands of a drunk driver could be you or your loved ones. Prayers to all those who have already lost loved ones to drunk driving crashes.
