Stop Food Waste in the USA

Stop Food Waste in the USA
The Issue
50% of food produced in developed or developing countries is never eaten. The Stop Food Waste movement is a global concern and countries have started to pass groundbreaking laws to stop the waste. France passed the first historic legislation and the law was voted in parliament thanks to Councilman Arash Derambarsh's campaign and petition. Supermarkets are now required to give all their unsold food to the hungry.
With this petition, we are proposing legislation to replace the 1996 Good Samaritan Public Law. This new Law would protect supermarkets and donors, specifying that:
- No state or local regulations can supersede the Public Law and bring lawsuits to donors.
- All supermarkets will be required to donate by their unsold edible food.
Beside the dramatic effects this waste has on the environment and the economy, one in six Americans faces hunger. Only 15 % of saved food would feed 25 million Americans.
We are throwing away 133 billion pounds of food every year...
- $161 billion dollars of edible food
- $47 billion worth of food available for sale at grocery stores does not make it to consumer's shopping carts.
Food waste is the second largest solid waste in the US, over 30 million tons is sent to landfills each year.
Large amounts of methane produced from food waste landfills are 21 times worse than carbon dioxide.
*These numbers come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environment Protection Agency.
We do literally nothing about it. There are many actions we can take on the food production process in order to curb the damaging effects waste has on the economy, environment and society. Food waste in the US is very similar to food waste in Europe. However, Europe is taking action and historic laws have been passed there requiring that supermarkets donate their unsold edible food.
This is the time to extend the mobilization in order to create a similar legislation in America to STOP FOOD WASTE. We need your help for this to become legislation so that no more food is thrown away anywhere in the United States. The law we want is simple: require supermarkets to give unsold food to the association of their choice and ban them from throwing away unsold food.
On September 25th 2015, United States adopted a set of goals at United Nations Summit, including the goal of reducing food waste by 50% by 2030.
The strategy includes the fight against food waste, which has launched a direct call to the public to gather the views of citizens on this issue. If hundreds of thousands of people ask the US government to include the requirement that supermarkets donate their unsold food, the call cannot be ignored.
