The Issue

In 2021, when the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, I was forced to flee my homeland because of the oppressive restrictions they imposed on education and public spaces for women and girls. Among the most heartbreaking was the ban on education for girls above grade six. This drastic move cut off millions of Afghan girls from a future filled with potential and opportunities that education provides.

Education is a fundamental human right and a vital pillar for the progress and development of any country. The prohibition that Afghan girls face today, deprives them not only of knowledge but also of hope. While the world debates policies and sends messages of support, many organizations have stepped up, providing online education as a lifeline. However, these programs, although essential, are not reaching every girl who wishes to learn, due to a lack of sufficient support and funding.

By 2022, the number of girls missing out on schooling was estimated to be in the millions. This is more than just a number—it represents dreams deferred and futures stalled. To combat this educational emergency, we must mobilize critical resources to online learning initiatives, ensuring they are accessible and inclusive.

We call on governments, international organizations, and donors globally to amplify their support and significantly increase funding for online educational programs targeting Afghan girls. This virtual educational framework can bridge the gap, allowing girls to access quality education securely from their homes. Programs must be expanded, improved, and innovatively deployed to circumvent the barriers erected by the Taliban.

Furthermore, technological support and internet access must be broadened to ensure all areas, including remote provinces, can benefit. Training teachers to deliver effective online education should also be a priority, ensuring that learning environments are engaging and impactful.

Together, we can create a vibrant educational bridge across the digital divide, ensuring that every Afghan girl has an opportunity to learn and strive for the future she deserves. Let's not allow political circumstances to steal their education and aspirations.

Please sign this petition to urge the global powers to act now, ensuring that education endures in Afghanistan through robust online support for Afghan girls. Let us stand together in solidarity for their right to learn.
