Stop the Increase in Permit Fees for NYC Sports Leagues and Improve NYC Field Conditions

The Issue

As a commissioner for local sports leagues, I've personally witnessed the immeasurable impact these leagues have on our community. They provide a safe, inexpensive means for recreation, fostering connection, mental well-being, and overall health among Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan residents. However, the New York City Parks Department's proposed permit fee increases threaten to dismantle these community mainstays.

These accessibility barriers aren't the only challenges we face. The poor conditions of our local Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan ball fields add another layer of difficulty, affecting the safety and overall experience of our players. Despite these obstacles, we stay committed to our mission, providing an affordable and safe space for everyone to get involved in sports.

According to the Trust for Public Land, more than two-thirds of New Yorkers live within a 10-minute walk of a park. This means that parks and sports leagues have an essential role in the city's fabric. They offer recreational space for millions, reduce stress, and improve the city's mental and physical health profile. If permit fees surge and maintenance of our local fields continues to be overlooked, these benefits may become unattainable for many.

Therefore, we urge the NYC Parks Department to reconsider its planned permit fee increases and heighten focus on improving the maintenance of our local fields. Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan deserved well-maintained fields and affordable sports for all residents. Your support can ensure that our community continues to enjoy these benefits. Please sign this petition to uphold the integrity and accessibility of our local sports leagues.
