The Issue

Living in Mission Hills, San Diego, has finally brought me the peace and stability I had longed for over the last three decades. After having moved countless times in unstable living conditions, the breathtaking view of downtown and the tranquility from my apartment became my sanctuary. As a middle school math teacher at a low income school, my days are often exhausting and challenging. Coming home to this view is a significant part of my daily solace and has been a key reason I chose to reside in this location.

However, a proposed 53 foot “affordable” apartment complex now threatens this peace. While I fully support affordable housing initiatives, I was informed that only about 1% of the new housing will actually be designated as affordable units. This is deeply concerning because the project was presented as a way to expand affordable housing options, yet it appears it will do little to achieve that goal. Instead, it risks worsening our living conditions for residents who have worked hard to find stability here, many of whom do not even face housing insecurity to begin with.

The larger Mission Hills neighborhood is a densely populated, historic community characterized by older homes — charming bungalows, cottages, Cape Cods, and mid century styles — that all adhere to the 40 foot height zoning restriction. The hillside is complemented by apartment and condominium complexes that blend with the landscape rather than overpower it. This balance gives Mission Hills its distinctive neighborhood character, one that reflects San Diego’s architectural heritage and sense of community.

Mission Hills is a historic and vibrant area known for its unique charm and character. New constructions must respect the integrity of the area and the needs of its residents. Rather than imposing developments that disrupt the neighborhood’s balance, city planning authorities should collaborate with the community to create solutions that truly address affordability while preserving the neighborhood’s character, livability, and infrastructure.

There are alternatives worth considering, such as developing unused or underutilized land plots, opting for lower building heights that still accommodate additional housing, or improving infrastructure to support an increased population while maintaining the community’s aesthetic and quality of life.

By signing this petition, we urge the City of San Diego and the relevant planning and development bodies to reconsider the current plan. Let’s work together to find a solution that genuinely benefits all stakeholders — new residents, existing community members, and our cherished neighborhoods. Your signature can help advocate for development that is both thoughtful and equitable, ensuring Mission Hills remains a place of beauty, balance, and belonging for everyone.
