Stop proposed Georgia bill that discriminates against Muslim women

The Issue

The purpose of this petition is to protest the Islamaphobic bill proposed by Georgia legislator Jason Spencer to amend Article 2 of Chapter 11 of Title 16 and Chapter 1 of Title 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated. The bill would deem it illegal for a woman to wear a head covering in public and prohibit an individual from wearing a head covering while taking a government-issued photo ID. The bill is clearly targeting women of Muslim faith who choose to wear a hijab, niqab or burqa. The original purpose of Article 2 of Chapter 11 of Title 16 was to prevent Ku Klux Klan members from veiling their faces and was deemed constitutional because of the hate group’s history of anonymous violence. That the proposed bill would liken the nonexistent threat of Muslim women wearing their traditional religious garb to a group as vile as the KKK is condemnable on a national level. The passing of this bill would be unconstitutional on the basis that it violates the rights of Muslim residents of Georgia. For this reason, signers of this petition wish to see the proposed bill discarded.
