Stop Cruel Aerial Killing of Idaho’s Wildlife

The Issue

Idaho’s wild places are part of who we are. The sound of a wolf in the distance, the sight of a fox crossing a field. These moments connect us to something bigger than ourselves.

HB 630 threatens that connection.

This bill would expand aerial gunning, chasing and shooting animals like wolves, coyotes, and foxes from helicopters, and reclassify wolves as “predatory animals,” allowing year-round killing with little restriction. It would also shift wildlife management away from Idaho Fish and Game, the state’s conservation experts.

For many Idahoans, this crosses a line.

Wolves, coyotes, and foxes are not just numbers in a policy debate. They are living, social animals that raise their young, form bonds, and play a role in the ecosystems we all depend on. The idea of pursuing them from the air, leaving them no chance to escape, is deeply unsettling to those who believe wildlife should be treated with respect.

This isn’t about politics. Idaho is home to people with different perspectives—ranchers, hunters, conservationists, and families who simply love the outdoors. But many of us share a common value: that how we treat animals matters.

Expanding extreme measures like aerial gunning risks undermining that value and changing the character of our state in ways we cannot easily reverse.

Idaho’s wildlife is a shared legacy. Once policies like this take hold, the damage cannot simply be undone.

We urge the Idaho Senate to reject HB 630 and choose a path that reflects both responsibility and compassion.
