The Issue

My name is Caitlyn larson and I live in the small town of Orogrande. Last week when my family went out hiking in the mountains just outside of town we saw big machines had torn up the desert and making roads and crushing up parts of the mountain.

We learned that a large mining company has plans to take millions of metric tons of iron ore from the mountains and send themto China. Taking that much rock will completely destroy the mountains and leave nothing behind. These mountains are home to alot of animals and alot of mining history.

There are golden eagle nest there that have been there as long as anyone living here can remember! ! Where will they go? What will happen to them?

The golden eagles are just one of the species to be concerned about! Owls, swallows, bats & birds of all kinds live there. There are bobcats, rattlesnakes, lizards, porcupines, horny toads, deer, antelope, coyotes, wolves, oryx and more. The tracks of these and other animals can be seen crossing the new roadway of the now torn up desert. It’s sad, and the plant life is being destroyed by the machines too. There are cactus that grow here that do not grow anywhere else in the world. What will happen to them? Where will all the animals go? And if they tear down the old mining and indian camps, how will anyone ever remember our history?

I do not think it is a good idea for anybody if all the mountains to be crushed up so some company can sell iron ore to to China! If you agree, PLEASE sign the petition to Save our Mountains.

Caitlyn LarsonPetition StarterI am 10 years old. I have two big sisters. One is a welder in El Paso and one is in college at NMSU in Las Cruces. I live in the rural New Mexico desert with my mom & dad, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 kittens, 2 parakeets, 1 potbelly pig, 1 goat, 3 guineas, 1 turkey, 6 chickens, some turtles and a mule named jack. I love animals. all kinds- domestic and wild. I have had more animals sometimes but this has been a dry year with not much rain so sometimes when the coyotes come to town looking for water to drink they find, sneak in, and catch some domestic animals for dinner . I learn at home and do not go to school. That is why I have enough time to take care of so many animals. I will go to college one day because I want to be a veterinarian. Right now i am trying to help animals by taking care of their home in our Mountains. That is why I have this campaign to help Save our Mountains
