The Issue
My name is Ben, and I'm a senior in high school here in New York. This year is supposed to be incredibly significant for me, a time I'd like to enjoy and cherish. I'm sure many of you understand the excitement and challenges that the final year of high school can bring. Unfortunately, the new "distraction-free school" initiative threatens to cast a shadow over this experience by banning any personal electronic devices, including phones, within our public school grounds.
Schools create a distance between a parent and their child. With distance brings worry. With this “distraction-free school” initiative, they promise that parents can contact their child through the schools phone, but is that truly the case? An error in the system, a emergency in the school, or even a technical failure can lead to a parent left worrying about their child without any knowledge of they’re safety or unable to properly execute planned or unplanned events, all because that very parent could not contact their child through their own phones.
Study halls and lunch breaks, which once offered moments of reprieve and connectivity with friends and family, will become zones of isolation without access to our phones. For students, these devices are not just tools of distraction; they're lifelines to the outside world, a way to decompress, stay organized, and maintain social connections. Most importantly, this decision regarding our daily school life was implemented without our input, despite being the very individuals who are most affected by it.
The initiative aims to improve focus and reduce distractions. However, it overlooks the benefits that come with responsible phone usage, such as quick access to educational resources, managing time effectively, and coordinating school-related activities. Studies suggest that when taught proper tech etiquette, students can integrate effective learning with responsible device usage rather than facing a blanket ban that could hamper their educational experience.
Additionally, recent reports highlight that access to personal electronic devices during unscheduled school periods can significantly reduce student stress and anxiety levels, fostering a more conducive learning environment. Yes, there are challenges with distractions, but isn’t it more productive to teach students how to manage their devices responsibly rather than taking them away completely?
I'm calling upon the decision-makers in New York State to reconsider this initiative. Let's find a balanced approach that allows students the freedom to use their phones responsibly while maintaining focus in the classroom. Perhaps implementing tech usage guidelines or just allowing phones in lunches and study halls could offer a middle ground
By signing this petition, you pledge your support towards a more balanced solution, one that respects the autonomy and needs of New York State students while still working towards an effective learning environment. Join me in advocating for a school policy that truly benefits everyone involved. Sign to let our voices be heard and our perspectives considered.
