Push for Aurora Police Accountability in the Kilyn Lewis Shooting/Death
The Issue
We want answers for the unjust death of Kilyn Lewis, aged 37, who was fatally shot on May 23 in Aurora, Colorado, by SWAT Officer Michael Dieck. Mr. Lewis was pursued in the parking lot of a condominium building, surrendering, attempting to kneel, and brandishing only a cell phone. Despite his cries of innocence and compliance, he was killed in an act of excessive and unnecessary force.
This is not the first time a shooting and killing of a Black man has occurred in Aurora. Black men are being shot and attacked by police in Aurora, CO, and across this nation for no reason. When will Aurora, CO, make the police accountable for their actions? What happened to Gov. Jared Polis who signed a broad police accountability bill into law that adds rules about when and how law enforcement can use deadly force?
According to a report from Mapping Police Violence, there were only 27 days in 2019 when police did not kill someone. This statistic, in addition to numerous highly publicized incidents of police brutality, reveals a desperate need for accountability and change in American law enforcement. This campaign implores the Aurora Police Department and state-level decision-makers to investigate this incident, hold Officer Dieck accountable, and enact measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Stand with us for justice and change by signing this petition.
There needs to be a request from Governor Polis to the General Attorney's office for a Federal Investigation into the shooting of Kilyn Lewis by Aurora Swat Officer Dieck.
