Compensate Students Living In Incomplete Halls

Compensate Students Living In Incomplete Halls

The Issue

Pure City has students from a vast range of universities and I ask all to sign and stand in solidarity with students facing issues in private halls.

On the first day of check-in there were severe delays of up to 5 hours before students could enter their rooms.

Construction work on parts of Pure had not been complete. Many bedrooms were not complete either – lack of furniture, freezers, appliances etc. For many months many of these amenities have been missing and there are still many ongoing issues.

Many students were placed in temporary rooms. We believe maintainance has not been in accordance with Pure's own guidelines or those of ANUK of which it is signed up to.

Noise of construction impacted upon students greatly and disrupted their studying. One courtyard heard loud drilling up until Monday 24th November- months after move-in.

Students have not been able to focus on their studies and have been forced to go elsewhere during the core hours of 10am -5pm.

Along with issues surrounding construction and maintenance, we have serious welfare concerns surrounding the privacy students have- there have been countless incidents reported to us where workers have walked into their rooms without prior notice.

Serious concerns have also been raised regarding the conduct of some Pure City staff- in particular security- blocking residents out of the building etc.

Whilst we understand Pure City has put measures in place to try to deal with the building issues that have arisen, it is still completely unacceptable. Students are paying between £209 and £535 per week. If elements of the building/rooms were not complete, they should not be paying for it. Also the disruption they faced during this time is an additional strain they should not have had placed on them.

We ask that Pure :

  • --Offer ALL students living there the right to terminate their contract if they wish to move elsewhere.

  • --Work towards delivering a monetary based compensation package to ALL those living at Pure who have encountered problems. This is open to negotiation.

  • --Issue an apology along with assurances that students will be compensated before the January examination period.

Pure City was supposed to be a home for students – many of whom are international and placed trust in Pure Student Living.

We are extremely disappointed by what has been delivered and we hope Pure Student Living will ensure that those students are compensated adequately for the disruption they have been facing.

Pure City have offered residents one week's rent however seem unwilling to negotiate further.

I ask that Pure get in touch with me directly to discuss this further on: president@city.ac.uk

Responded
Dear Residents, We are aware that a number of the residents in our Pure City residence have been subject to varying degrees of disruption and we sincerely regret the inconvenience caused. This has resulted from certain unforeseen overruns in the construction timetable that had previously been agreed with our building contractor. While those who have informed us of their concerns represent a minority of the students in our property, we are taking these complaints very seriously as the provision of an exemplary accommodation service is Pure Student Living’s overriding business principle. We have an open door policy for all our residents to ensure we are able to address any concerns and are continuing to communicate with them, as we have done throughout this temporary period of disruption, to ensure they are fully informed of the situation. We have also worked with those students who have been directly affected to ensure any future disruption is minimized. At the same time we are continuing our ongoing dialogue with City University both to ensure they are fully aware of the issues and to discuss possible recompense to impacted students. Now that the building works are nearing completion we are finalising a compensation package which we expect to put to residents in the next couple of weeks and will most likely comprise the option of a rent rebate or some other form of benefit which we are currently finalising with City University. We hope this matter can be resolved soon and are sorry for any inconvenience caused. Kind regards David Cocker Operations Manager Pure City
