Give Students Access To Water In The Library
Students at City University London do not have access to any source of drinking water in the library, The closest water fountains are in the Tait building, however this requires students to swipe in and out of the library which takes time and is inconvenient. Student feedback gathered by the Students’ Union overwhelmingly states that this is inconvenient and discourages students to get water and stay hydrated. For the past two exam periods (January and Summer) the doors to the Tait water fountains have been locked at the weekends meaning students had to leave the university premises to get water. The doors were opened after the Students’ Union raised the issue with Property and Facilities. Property and Facilities solved this issue promptly both times however it raises the general issue of University’s ensuring students have adequate water being thought about. This request by students has been raised to the Students’ Union and Student Experience Committees. The Students’ Union has raised this to Property and Facilities, the library, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee last year too and this petition seeks to show further support for a provision especially with the upcoming exams. We believe that any form of water provision, especially during exam periods, would be greatly appreciated by those studying in the library! We understand that the university do not wish to install water fountains at the moment as construction would cause disruption and noise. We agree that installation is no longer a solution for helping students this semester. However, we believe students should stay hydrated whilst studying, and we believe in making it as easy as possible for them to drink water during intense periods such as examination period. Therefore, we ask the university to consider implementing a temporary provision of water, in lieu of installing water fountains, that does not cause disruption, in lieu of investing in the installation of more water fountains, which should be commenced after the exam period as a long term solution. This petition has been created to raise the support the university will have from students if they decide to implement drinking water provision available for students in the library during exams. There have been so many great developments around City University London’s Library and this support will be yet another great addition for students. To all our students, Keep Calm Study On! Peace, Love and Hydration!
Remove "Pisslam 2" and ALL other hate groups/pages
We ask Facebook to remove Pisslam 2 as it hosts hate speech targetted at a religious group. We ask Facebook to delete groups/pages perpetuating hate thus violating Facebook's Community Standards. We also ask why when initially reporting these pages/groups, Facebook review says they do NOT violate standards. This does not encourage users to report hate.Other existing pages we reported to be removed that Facebook say DO NOT violate it’s standards:Ex Muslim Atheists – 205 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Ex-Muslim-Atheists/486137391484072?ref=profile Pisslam 2 – 656 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/Pisslam2?ref=profile To the creators of these pages and groups. Freedom of Speech is a beautiful thing, but why use it to fuel hatred towards one another? Infringing on a individual’s right to practice his/her religion freely without ridicule or hate is devastating to watch. This is why I have created this petition. It is not an attack upon you but a request that we use our social media platforms to promote love rather than hate. It would infact mean more for you to take it upon yourself to remove the pages/groups rather than have it forcefully removed by Facebook. Please see below for the stories of previous pages removed :_________________________________________________________________REMOVED: KORANIMAL ZOOWe also SUCCESSFULLY petitioned Facebook to remove the page : "Koranimal Zoo" "A Disease Named Islam” and all other Facebook groups targeting religious groups. The page actively promote hatred and violent acts towards the Muslim community.Initially when "Koranimal Zoo" was been reported to Facebook as "Hate speech" the response read:“Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the page you reported for containing hate speech or symbols and found it doesn't violate our Community Standards. The Hate speech section of Facebook’s Community Standards reads:“Facebook does not permit hate speech, but distinguishes between serious and humorous speech. While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.”There is nothing humorous about insulting others’ religious beliefs.Images of holy places such as Mecca being obliterated, Muslim women compared to rubbish bins, excretion on holy texts, are all attacks on Islam.Posting a picture with the Nazi Swastika accompanied with the words : “HITLER is back and he is wearing a HEADSCARF” is unacceptable. This page distinctly targets religious groups and contains offensive imagery, symbols and text.KORANIMAL ZOO HAS NOW BEEN REMOVED! Thank you Facebook. We would also like more information on why this was not removed initially following reports- we were surprised that this page was not removed in accordance to Facebook’s community standards._________________________________________________________________REMOVED: “A disease named Islam” Following the removal of the page "Koranimal Zoo" we petitioned Facebook to remove the group “A Disease Named Islam!” and all others that encourage hate speech. The "about" section of the group read: “We will not accept hate towards another race or other religion except Islam in this group or our page!” - thus admitting the targeting a religious group! This group was been reported for hate speech and the review read it did not violate Facebook's community standards however it was later removed. Peace and Love_________________________________________________09/11/2014The following pages have now been removed. Though this is good news we still find it unacceptable that they were found to not breech Facebook's "Community Standards" in the first instance when reported.I Hate Islam – 463 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/Pisslam01?ref=profileThe Flying Spaghetti Monster will put Allah under his balls and noodles – 179 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Flying-Spaghetti-Monster-will-put-Allah-under-his-balls-and-noodles/620677811349063?ref=profileThe WORLD Against ISLAM – 825 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/The-WORLD-Against-ISLAM/543216175794153?fref=tsIslam is a Symbol of Terrorism - 2,852 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/fakereligion?ref=profileNo more muzlimz 5 -2,385 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/No-more-muzlims-5/177660785778213?ref=streamEverybody DRAW Mohammed DAY on Tuesday May 20, 2014 – 296 likes https://www.facebook.com/pages/Everybody-DRAW-Mohammed-DAY-on-Tuesday-May-20-2014/1446045308971205?ref=profileStop Islamification Wake Up World: 2,975 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/SIWUW?ref=profileIzlam is a mental disease- 687 likes https://www.facebook.com/izlam.is.a.mental.disease?fref=tsThe Anti Islamic World Wide movement -2,082 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Anti-Islamic-World-Wide-Movement-II/1415685188671164?ref=profileI hate Islam – 98 likeshttps://www.facebook.com/pages/I-hate-Islam/234052786795794?ref=ts&fref=ts
Stop forcing students to move out of flats they have paid for.
Residents at Woodland Court UNITE student accommodation have been told to move from their rooms during summer despite holding a signed tenancy to live their till September. One block of flats have been asked to leave the rooms by the 24th June whilst another block has been asked to leave by the 18th August. UNITE say this happened as they have sold the flats to an International Language School and the University of Arts London. Students were given only 5 days to respond to a letter stating if they wish to end their tenancy and be refunded the money paid till September or accept alternative accommodation (provided by UNITE). The misdated letter containing spelling mistakes was placed under students doors at 2am Friday. No management were on site to deal with distressed students from 2pm Friday until Monday. Students living in Woodland Court are from universities all across London including UCL, London Metropolitan, SOAS, City, Westminister, Birkbeck and more. The news came as a shock to the students’ many of whom are facing pressures already from examinations. UNITE say legally they have the right to move students from their room for "better management." When we signed we did not believe selling our rooms to other people, and moving us somewhere else is what UNITE meant by "better management." Students feel UNITE have betrayed their trust and security as well compromised their welfare. For some students living in Woodland Court, this is the second time they've been asked to move. UNITE should respect the original tenancy agreement they held with students and have the decency to let students stay in their room without disruption - especially during examination period. We are asking UNITE to reverse their decision and let students stay in the rooms they have paid for!
