Protect Scientific Research at Georgia Tech

Protect Scientific Research at Georgia Tech
The Issue
Current executive actions by President Trump threaten to destroy the security of future science funding at The Georgia Institute of Technology.
Georgia Tech currently receives over $100 million per month in federal funding for research, representing an investment in knowledge, technology, and the scientific leaders of tomorrow. In Fiscal Year 2025 alone, 14% of the Institute’s revenue came from the federal government.
On January 20th, President Trump passed executive order “Protecting Civil Rights and Expanding Individual Opportunity” which sought to eliminate all diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) related work in the federal workforce, and specifically blocked DEI-related grants or contracts, which directly apply to research at the Institute.
The next day, Trump passed another order: “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” which required all contract and grant rewards to certify that they complied with “Federal anti-discrimination laws.”
The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE has also significantly impacted scientific funding by implementing cost-cutting measures that have led to reduced funding for research. Federal institutes such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are all organizations that directly contribute to Tech research, and cuts in their funding have already resulted in the termination of research projects, layoffs of research staff, and a general decline in research funding on the national level. The future of Georgia Tech research is next.
As students, participating in research is an opportunity for us to gain a deeper understanding of our chosen field, develop essential skills, and can enhance our academic and career prospects. Cutting federal research funding jeopardizes this future.
We urge the local and federal agencies to sustain and increase financing for scientific research at Georgia Tech. In a time where funding from the federal government is uncertain, please join us in petitioning local legislators for consistent and increased financial support for Georgia Tech's critical research work. We are asking for increased funding on the state level to secure the stability of Tech’s science funding in a time of federal funding uncertainty.
